Just got myself a free (and autographed) copy of DoW2 care of a compo on neoseeker and I'm having trouble with the install. It goes though the process until it gets to the end of "preparing components for installation" and then just hangs.
I'm hypothesising that it's having trouble connecting to steam because I'm capped and back on shitty dialup speed for the next 4 days, would this be a correct supposition? I'm sort of doubting it the more I think of it because I was able to have the steam app open and showing me as logged in so Im a bit confuzzled again.
I've also read of a patch that weighs in at 130MB, would that be the source of my problems? I was rather hoping that it wouldn't try to install patches until the game itself was installed, especially since I've told steam very specifically to never auto-update but we all know those settings mean jack shit when software has got its mind made up about something.
Any suggestions on what I could do that might let me install my new game before friday?

I think you'd be better off using good ol' broadband to install. Registering games on Steam require Steam (obviously), and Steam does require some crazy speeds. Maybe you should go to "Settings", and change your Internet speed?
Go to your friend's house or internet cafe and install your game and patch it. Then backup the game from Steam then go to your home and reinstall from your backup. With this you can play your game.

This. If the internet connection is slow, downloading it elsewhere is the way to go.
For how long does the install "hang"?
If Steam is trying to start, it is often diabolically slow on slower connections, but it will start eventually. It could easily take 5 minutes or more though.
Check your network traffic to see if the network is working hard during the "hang", if it is then it's probably not hung up but trying to downloading something before proceeding. If you see sporadic network traffic then I'd say Steam is attempting to start - just give it some time.
Sometimes Steam can take a very long time to do things as the client still appears to be stuck on using one core. So if you a have a multi core system, that can cause some of the slow down.
During installs, Steam tends to try an allocate everything first I think, then it finally starts to download. I haven't tried attaching a Steam protected retail disc to Steam since Half Life 2 but it used to be such that you had to install from the disc first before you could download anything.
That may have changed so if you know anyone who has already purchased the game and run it through Steam, you could try and get a Steam backup off of them or simply copy their directory over to your PC -- hopefully avoiding the download.
As for turning off auto update, you may as well forget it, as chances are good that you'll have to run the game online at least once before it'll even accept that setting properly. Howver, if you're in Australia, don't you have access to a non-metered content server such as Bigpond or something?
If you do there are programs you get online to force Steam to connect to the correct server, thus avoiding the cap.

This is a disc version and every so often the disc does actually spin up which implies its doing stuff but it never seems to.

Yeah I was thinking something like that but after 2 & 1/2 hours I'm pretty sure its a bigger issue than this.
I think the broadband is the issue, I've got bucketloads of bandwidth from 3am to 10am, I think I'll just have an early night and get up at like 5am & see what I can get done. Cheers guys
This is why I never bought the game. :P

Me too.
But the temptation is great. I'm Playing the DoW 1 and the xpacks like crazy + reading the Horus Heresy series + drooling at the new console Space Marine game.

Its safe to say that I would have bought it at release if it wasn't for the addware requirements.

I had it ordered and everything. =/
Such a shame.
I know it's late but:- Steam is particularly bad here in Aus if you don't have broadband speed. Since I once would always breach my cap, I ended up setting it to *not* check for game-updates on startup. Just the check alone (not any actual update) could easily take half an hour at dialup speeds.
Well I managed to get it installed and running, it was well worth getting up early for because I think the game is awesome. Frankly I think its worth putting up with the additional crap for, after all its the game that matters and the 2 apps you need aren't exactly resource hogs.
I've never been much of a fan of steam and the update stuff does get annoying, especially since it demanded I restart steam twice in as many hours because of a new update, presumably I loaded it at exactly the wrong time.
Personally I like the games for windows live thing, especially how its a unified profile with the 360, if they ever make the gaming handheld that they've had rumours about since the original xbox dropped I hope they continue the trend
I finally caved into the temptation and bought this game.
The greeting I got when I wanted to enjoy my new purchase was:
"The Steam servers are currently too busy to handle your request."
I really hate this online activation crap!
Its not exactly my favourite thing in the word, bloody annoying
