I'm posting this in general discussion, because it's happening with more than just one game.

Today I got a brand new 1TB external hard drive for my laptop. I tested it with Fallout first to make sure it was working, uninstalled Fallout and then re-installed it to the new drive. It works perfectly with no problems at all.

So now I'm in the process of switching over as many games as I can to the new external drive, since it's much bigger than my standard internal one. But I've caught a snag when trying to install Planescape Torment and Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura.

For each of them, about halfway through the process, the installation will freeze and an error message will come up saying something close to "An error occurred while trying to copy a file. The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error."

And fyi, I'm running Win7 64 bit. And I have already tried completely uninstalling, re-downloading, and re-installing both of them several times each with the same results each time.

The error you are getting is an I/O error, it has nothing to do with GOG installers. Did you do a full disk surface scan, it seems your new 1TB drive has bad sectors or there is a problem with the connection to your PC.

I would advise you to copy the intallers on the external drive and run them from there. As the installers and the destination folder will be on the same HDD, you remove a lot of I/O sequences from the equation.

My guess would be that the connection between the HDD and the computer doesn't cope with the extraction / copy / sequence used by most installers. Could be a question of interface speed ( is it an USB 3 HDD ? A USB 2 ? ), a problem with the usb port used, a question of memory usage.

If the problem persists, please post some more deatil on your setup ( laptop, desktop? connection type ? HDD type ? )

Alright, well I tried doing a disk scan and it came up with no problems.

I tried copying the installer over to the external drive, but it won't let me. The copying process stopped halfway through and slowed down my computer immensely.

Before I bought the new drive I made sure that they were compatible, both it and my computer use USB 3.0 connections.

I'm using a laptop, and the new drive is a Seagate brand one.

Also I'm thinking it might be a problem with my computer now, cause when I tried to download a different game the download process slowed to a stop almost immediately (GOG Downloader read at only a few hundred kb per second, then dropped to zero). Then it froze my computer and I had to reset it manually.

How much free space do you have left on the internal HDD ? You could experience that kind of things if windows was unable to create temporary files or to use its virtual memory.

You could try to clean your system files with something like Piriform's ccleaner.

EDIT : looking around for similar cases, I see other causes could be

- an obsolete USB driver ( check the laptop's manufacturer website for an update )
- a problem with your usb port ( try connecting the drive to another port, preferably usb 2.0 )
- a problem with the firmware of the external drive ( check Seagate's website, but I would be cautious with firmwares )

I have plenty of space left on my internal HDD, well over 100 GB's.

There could indeed be a problem with the USB connections though. I just tried an alternate version of your earlier advice, and switched the download location in the GOG Downloader to a new folder on the external drive. Tried it with both games and they downloaded and installed without any problems.


But why, if it's a problem with the connection, would some games not install properly (Planescape, Arcanum) and several other games I tried worked fine (Fallout, Dragonsphere)?

I guess it would have to do with the size of the files or with the process used by the installer ( extraction of compressed files or creation of new files etc. ) . Probably size. as if the amount of data sent was too large for what the recipient peripheral could get and the two ends of the copy process were not synchonizing properly

And the fact files download on the drive points to that too, as the download speed ( between 400 Kbits and 2 M bits I suppose ) will be well under the available bandwith for usb 3.0 ( 5 Gbits/second)

By the way, at which speed do you download and have you tested the speed of this HDD ?

I have not tested the speed of any of my HDD's, internal or external. And tbh I don't know how, though I'm sure a simple Google search could alleviate that.


And my average download speed is 3.8 Mb/s. It goes up and down randomly at times, sometimes going as high as 4.9 Mb/s or as low as 3.4, but usually lingers around 3.8.

The program you linked won't work, says it's not the most up to date version.

But anyway, I found a different little program (Called Roadkil's Disk Speed 2.0) that tested my disk speed on my external drive. According to it, the access time is 17.88 ms. The cached speed is 259.79 MB/sec. The max read speed is 108.85 MB/sec, and the overall score is 611.2.

So, is that good? lol

sorry for that. They probably released a new version since I used it.

With a read speed above 100 MB/s and tests that disn't return an error,, you're at least more or less sure it's not a problem with the drive itself.

If you have a usb 2.0 port on the computer, connecting the drive to it will probably change nothing to the drive performance and you may have better chances to avoid those i/o issues. Other than that, your best chance is to download directly on the drive and install files from there.

Could possibly have something to do with the way the drive is formatted?

Is it FAT 32 or NTFS?

I would definitely try formatting it to NTFS and then try the installation again.

I'm not sure which way it's formatted, but tbh I'm fine with it as long as it keeps working this way. It's no extra hassle downloading them to the external drive, so I don't mind.

If your running WinXP or newer you should make sure it is formatted as NTFS. FAT32 has the 4GB file size limit. I don't think any of the GOG files are that large, but I still don't like using FAT32.
