the.kuribo: The gender ratio is surprising. I didn't expect it to be nearly even.

I'm glad to see that this game is doing so well in general, and particularly on Steam where I usually think of the demographic as being more of the BOOM! HEADSHOT, BITCH variety.
that an ignorant comment

Piranjade: I find it a bit scary what they know about their players, like length of play session...
Oh come on, they use the kind of stats that many gamers demand themselves. First everyone's bitching that GOG doesn't track playtime and then everyone's scared when devs show that they know some numbers of players who play on Steam or submit highscores.

And honestly: it's not nearly as scary once you've seen it from the other side yourself. It only takes some very basic numbers to be transmitted along with your highscore (for example) and already devs have such stats. Make a game track seconds while it's not paused, transmit the final number along with the stats the player wants to display online and there you have it, reliable numbers on the length of a game session. Then the devs can easily spot the extreme values, determine averages etc., it doesn't mean that anyone's really spying on the players, it's not like they are going through the entire list in detail, determining which nickname belongs to whom etc..

I haven't played the game myself yet but I doubt the devs only use the basic Steam stats for tracking this stuff, though. You get much more helpful results if you make the game itself submit some more internal parameters that are of no use to Steam but are certainly interesting to the devs.

OmarTheSyrian: 16 HOURS!!
who's is going to play a games for 16 hours in one session??

What about GOG version?
I usually spend 15-17 hours gaming, not on the same game though xD

Melhelix: I'm, um, guilty of lengthier sessions than that. *cough* Especially with things like HoMM III and Age of Empires II. Also Spiderwebs games... yeah. *cough*
avatar
CarrionCrow: Oh no! ;)
Seriously though, you're definitely not the only one. Hell, if anyone can find a game good enough to be that captivating, and get to enjoy it for that length of time without having to stop to do other things? Go for it.
I used to be that way back when I was young, nowadays two hours is my max probably.

I don't think you read my comment the right way. I'd argue that I was ignorant before I saw the infographic and made the comment. Now I realize that Steam isn't just full of testosterone, adrenaline driven boys.

I think what I really take away from the infographic is how far Steam is into the mainstream right now. It really is like the App store but for PC games, and it seems the demographics are a lot wider than I had thought. On the one hand, I'm glad that PC gaming is thriving -- but on the other, it makes me sad to see so many people getting 100% tied to their Steam accounts and often times preferring Steam copies to DRM-Free ones even at equal prices.

I don't dispute that. I wholly agree I am ignorant about how massive Steam really is. I've been pretty inactive in the gaming world the past decade or so, and just recently am getting caught up on the state of the industry the past couple of months.

This infographic was an eye opener for me. So yeah, I guess I was/am ignorant. But I'm glad that I'm learning the truth. I mean, I knew that Steam was BIG in the PC gaming world... but I didn't know how BIG the PC gaming world was getting.

In any case, the crux of my comment was that it is refreshing to see an anti-war game do so well, and also to see much more evenly distributed gender demographics as gaming has traditionally been a very male-dominated industry in the past.

I fear I'm not "everybody" then. I don't like my playtime to be tracked.
Maybe I'm just more suited to GOG than to Steam. :-)

My longest time on a game was 5 hours maybe, except that my PC will blow up :D so I have to balance between gaming and surfing the web, so it can be stretched to 10 hours.

Kind of funny, i guess even with the 19€/$ the game sold like hot cupcakes....
"In Europe, the game saw the best sales in: Russia"
Hmmmm.
Thanks, that was interesting.
Now I would like to know what would anyone do if they successfully finance dev of their game in 2 days.

My opinions :
- Doing a big sale at -50% (or more) in order to overkill the market would be a stupid thing to do.
- Cooking a Macro-DLC would be 'the normal course of action' ; breeding µDLCs by the dozen a shit move (when isn't that a shit move ?)
- I don't see the point in 'just cashing in'

I personally wouldn't put the game on a sale ever, preparing big chunks of free content while transitioning on the next project.

Melhelix: I used to work crazy hours, doing 80+ hours a week for a month or two straight, and then have three weeks completely off. It made for an interesting version of relaxing. :P

HijacK: That is nuts. What was your job?
I was a technical editor working as a subcontractor for a nuclear engineering and consulting company that specialized in power plant safeguards. It was basically a translation job. Take these 120 page reports and turn them in to something a bunch of regular people can understand. Dry reading, but the occasional typo made it entertaining at least.
Apparently This War of Mine sells like sliced bread, just have a look at the IndieGala Store:

https://www.indiegala.com/store

"A prize to our faithful customers for Black Friday!
Spend at least €24 in a unique transaction on our store, and get a FREE copy of This War of Mine."

:D
