RSHabroptilus: I damn well know at least one of you doesn't like the X-COM games and prefers the console-ized style of game he's crying about. Effing poser. Stop trying so hard to fit in all the time. You know who you are.

Oh god, we have a SPY amongst us! Quick, someone line up GoG people and bring on the Pyro!

You can't use the Pyro, they've reduced Flamethrower damage by 20%!

Aliasalpha: I personally like both but I also like it when franchises with potential aren't shat upon to push out a generic FPS thats only peripherally related to the franchise. THAT is the thing that most of us are annoyed at, not the fact that it's an FPS but the fact it seems to ignore everything but the name of the original

On point and well said.

Delixe: There is a distinct difference to what Bethesda did with Fallout and what 2K are doing with X-COM. Bethesda made a new game in the Fallout universe. It used S.P.E.C.I.A.L and VATS and was in the same universe. Ignore the fanatics and go to NMA the people who had pitchforks and torches ready for Fallout 3. They decided they didn't hate it. That was high praise indeed.
2K are making a completely different game not set in the same universe and not using anything from the original games. Yet they are calling it X-Com. Sorry XCOM. It's a pathetic attempt to make more money off the Bioshock engine while paying no attention to what fans loved about the original. EA were bad with C&C4 but at least they didn't ignore everything about the C&C universe and make a shooter about the beginnings of GDI using the Crysis engine.

Sure, it is different, but I don't see why this is a bad thing anyway. It is like a re-imagining. Sure they could have used another title, but what if they have stuff in it which really makes it a part of the Xcom series somehow? We don't know enough about the game at this stage, so anything can happen.
Oh, and if the made a shooter about the beginnings of GDI using the Crysis engine, they wouldn't have done anything wrong. It would just be like a spiritual sequel to C&C: Renegade. Which would rock.

Generic FPS? This doesn't sound like a generic FPS at all. What I could glean from that article made this sound kinda original. I for one is looking forward to hear more about it. Maybe seeing some photos or trailers. It sounded like something I have yet to see, a game with aliens where you are actually required to hide from them. It seemed like you would die pretty fast if you went out guns blazing. And that you got pretty hurt from the brief meetings with the goo-thingys. So it sounds more like a survival-investigation game. With light FPS elements. But this might change drastically once we learn more about it. But for now I am interested.
What's next, a Jagged Alliance third person crap? Geez. X-Com is dead, way to piss on the roses on it's grave.

Ok I'll just use Caleb instead. Press "1" for Pitchfork.

Durandir: I think it is sad how negative gamers are today.

Sad, yes. But it is justified to some degree. We've seen too much crap like this. So we tend to assume the worst, because the worst is what we frequently get.

Durandir: To clarify right away, I have never played X-com, barely heard of it.
I think it is sad how negative gamers are today.

You need to play it then to see why most of us are bitching about it. It's that great.
I'm am negative and pessimistic. I get that on one other forum too. But I prefer to be pessimistic than be optimistic and then let my hopes come all crashing down all the time.
Optimism is the wife of disappointment

Sure, I can get that. It's not like I have taken everything that comes out with a smile. Oh how I mourn what Spore could have been for instance. Instead we got some watered down cutesy stuff. It was still fun for a little while, but it was not the game I envisioned to be playing for ages.

I have it on my "must-play" list. But I know that playing it will not change the fact that I might love this new game, and I still am very much intrigued by it now after I read up on the first games. I haven't read up on them until now, but after doing so, I see that the new game is more faithful to the old games than you guys have been saying. Hear me out:
It seems this game can be looked at like a prequel to the first game. This is before any aliens have really come out in the open so to speak, so Earth doesn't have the X-Com Unit yet.
You travel around the map investigating instead of directly answering an alien threat. You have to reverse engineer their technology (the taking pictures for your "Q" guy) in order to beat them. Because of these things which are more or less lifted from the other games, there might be more in the works. You might be upgrading your base in between missions.
Since we don't have much information yet, this might very well be the case. If it is, then this will be an even more awesome game, as it is a prequel to the first X-com game. Which makes sense, since this game is set during the 1960's or something, according to the evidence on the ARG site. If not then it might just be a cool game with the X-com name. I can see why people are upset about that, but it might still be an awesome game.
I wonder how old you are... I too was under the impression that being pessimistic would rule out the disappointment of "failure". But then I broke my back at the age of 19. During the six month recovery I realized that I'd rather enjoy life, so now I just enjoy whatever I can. So what if the game doesn't meet my expectations. There are plenty of other games out there, so no need to get down because of one game. Now I am only 23 years old, so I am not an "old wise man" (or old coot if you don't like me for being interested in this game), but I still think I speak the wise truth there.

I direct you to the paragraph above. Enjoy life instead. It's very short.
Oh I agree mate, thats why I tend to dismiss things like this unless there's sufficient reason to hope that it'll be good. If I'm wrong then I'll know it eventually and be able to pick the game up cheaper so it's win-win

That's a good tactic. The only reason I "follow" this game is because of the ARG I was suddenly a part of. It is awesome though, getting pictures and classified documents from USA. 2K Games know how to run a cool ARG :D

If the new game doesn't have any or some of the following: base building, squad hiring, squad management, squad inventory, research, researching of new weapons, armour and items, MC etc I wouldn't use the name X-COM. For me, the name is very important, so I would totally hate it that they would take a great classic and totally change its genre to something else which is not true to the originals. Even if the new game ended up as the BEST FPS ever made in history, I wouldn't recognise it as pure X-COM. Call it stubborness or whatever, I don't really care. I've seen enough butchering of my other favourite games and TV shows/movies to care anymore.
As for the pessimism stuff, even though I'm a big fan of the show Shawshank Redemption, which emphasizes on hope and being always positive in the worst situations possible, I still prefer being pessimistic over being disappointed. I got not much other games to look to now, I find myself replaying my older games avoiding most AAA titles that come out these days for almost all genres. Luckily there are certain companies making new games that I will always buy and look out for and also playing atm.

Anyone bought the latest PCG?
I am hoping some scans will show up somewhere >_>
Anywho, reading the comments on that site is the way to go until someone here get their hands on it. And reading the comments make me even more interested in the game. Base building, research, investigation gameplay, not that much shooting etc.
This quote says it all I think:
“It’s more about running recon on the enemy, researching, expanding your base and working out where to strike the enemy than just shooting bad guys. ”
Color me interested!
