LumberingTroll: it does have options similar to traditional DRM, in which steam would have to be installed and running in order to play the game, we wouldn't use that.
Will I be able to download it from Steam and copy the files to a thumbdrive to play without the client?

hedwards: Still, I like what I'm seeing and they do appear to be doing a ton of work, so I can't be too upset about that. Code Hero looks like it's shaping up to be awesome.
Yeah CH has been a bit quiet lately, but I don't care as long as the final product shapes up to be good (and so long as my boxed copy gets here).

hedwards: I've been having my own trouble with Primer labs, but it's completely legitimate, they don't have many folks for support and the KS kept demanding more features so what would have been out months ago only came out like a week or so ago, as an Alpha.
What sort of trouble? I ask because I backed that too, but haven't been following it recently.

Theoretically. A few Steam games, like Binding of Isaac, have the ability to be played without Steam existing on the computer once they've been downloaded and such. There's a thread about it.

BUT, given the nature of this rapid change in thinking that is coinciding with Greenlight, and the fact that DESPITE being DRM-free, his attitude seems to be "If we get on Steam, fuck the other places. We don't need them!" (which anyone with business sense would know is a horrible attitude), I'd be inclined to say that the game is going to use the Steamworks DRM when it comes out.
Thanks to Badland Studio for ruining Kickstarter for everyone. I'm just glad I didn't back this, otherwise I would be really pissed.
I am sorry you guys seem to think you know what my exact plans are and continue to make wild speculation. I will not be continuing this conversation as its taking more time to track this nonsense than it should and I would rather be working on the game. In the end I suppose you will just have to wait and see how I plan to release it. People have difference opinions, likes and dislikes, and not everyone can be pleased.

If anyone has any kind of constructive questions please feel free to ask. I will try to keep an eye on this thread but our official forums would be best as the rest of the team watches there as well.

Wellp. You've officially shot yourself in the foot.

Oh and nice shameless forum plug. Of course I'll go there, because after that, the first thing I want to do is go on a forum where you can not only insult, but DELETE my legitimate concerns.

My question was legitimate and it wasn't answered.

Sorry I missed this, yes the Steam release will be handled in this way. Though I cannot guarantee it will run well from a thumb drive right now the game is looking to be several gigs.

I just don't get why, if it's going to be DRM-free, it can't be on even just Gamersgate AND Steam, or Amazon Digital AND Steam. Why JUST Steam if you get Greenlit?

That's pretty much my point, I never said it would only be on Steam you guys did. I said that our distribution hasn't been finalized. I did say it was a possibility though.

I went back and looked at the Kickstarter update I see why people are confused, I said
"The reason I am not wanting to be on multiple services is that each one handles patches / updates in their own way."

This was just expressing what I wanted, I did not mean to say that it was the final decision. What I want and what I decide to do for the company may not always be the same things. I usually state pretty explicitly when a decision on something has been made, and right now distribution is still up in the air, and will be until we are closer to release.

But, I think where we're coming from, in the way you said it, it was THE possibility, and that you were very strongly leaning towards it, citing your only reason for that as "time and money spent on an authentication system".

And then instead of clarifying that, you told us we were pretty much trolling assholes.

Interesting. This alleviates things somewhat. Thanks for confirming this.

Yeah, that's what he seems to be intimating, if he does this and is using Steam as a storefront only, then I think it's fair to say he kept his promise. If not he broke it.

I didn't back this, but given his general attitude I don't hold much hope for you guys. In fairness to him, he's likely finding out what a bitch developing an actual release quality game is (as any end user software development is). I wouldn't be surprised if someone found, after their KS, that it was either leverage Steamworks to get promised functionality in or the project fails. If that's the case, I could sort of understand, but such a situation should be communicated with apology and humility... not flippancy and annoyance.

Seriously, given he could hand 500 bucks to a cracker to crack the Steam DRM parts back out of his game (with his help) and provide the result to his backers, then sell only on Steam, I'm not sure what his hangup is.

It may just be me, but that's not the way it came off. It came off as "oh, we could go with GOG, Desura, Gamersgate, or any of the many others, but if we get on Steam, that's all we'll ever need."

And then, of course, the flippancy and annoyance. I would have easily just calmed down a bit if it weren't for that. He could have easily said early on "Look, you're misinterpreting this. Here's what I actually meant." But he didn't.

And confusion solved! Now, I know you just want to make your game, I can relate, being a developer I just want to do my thing too, but you bit off client relations on this one, it's your hat now, wear it:)
