Coelocanth: All very good and valid points. The issue I have with the fourth movie is a complete lack of soul. I found the first and third movies had plenty of it with the second one being somewhat of a lesser movie than those two. Yes, there were a ton of over-the-top and ridiculous scenes. But somehow they worked and the movies were enjoyable (again, the second one to a much lesser extent).

But the fourth one - none of that. Maybe it was the creaky, shambling 70-year-old Indy. Maybe it was the passage of so much time from the third movie. Maybe it was the supporting cast. Whatever it was, it didn't work. At least not for me. I can still enjoy the other movies and rewatch them at least once a year. I suffered through the fourth one a second time because my daughter wanted to see it (incidentally, she hated it as well and had no idea what my opinion of it was, as I didn't want to taint her enjoyment of it). But I'll never watch it again.
TBH, I get the feeling that this is one of those cases where it's largely a matter of opinion. I'm not sure it's really the movie that was the problem, so much as the expectations that some people had. This isn't the case like the Star Wars prequel where the movies had serious demonstrable problems that weren't there in the original. People tend to complain about the refrigerator and the ending.

I think the ending is something that's just plain objectionable, I've rewatched the movie a few times and there aren't any hints at all that inter-dimensional aliens were a possibility. I guess arguably them referencing Roswell and the Nazca lines could be a hint that they were looking for somebody that was able to fly, but that would justify space aliens and not inter-dimensional travel.

Most definitely. I absolutely accept that this is only my own personal opinion. As I noted, I'm not one to jump on the movie hate bandwagon (hell, I've watched all the Twilight movies more than once and enjoyed them! Why? Because my wife loves them and I enjoy watching with her. Anyway, I digress...)

Well, there's the 'crystal skulls' in the title of the movie. If you know anything about them, it wouldn't be that much of a shock to see the interdimensional travel/aliens angle come into play. There's a lot of whacked out ideas connected to those skulls.

Those two things (ending and refrigerator) are only the most obvious problems for me. The movie in its entirety just didn't do it for me. As I said previously, the 'soul' of the franchise just didn't seem to be there. The fun, the light-heartedness, the je ne sais quoi. It just wasn't there for me. At all.
I'm with Coelo. On its own merits, Crystal Skulls is a crap movie. For me, it's mostly because of Shia.

I hate Shia, he dared to try to replace Indy and made out with Megan Fox in Transformers.. so much sins XD

Anyway, if creating something new is so impossible, why doesn't Hollywood remake old shitty movies to try to improve them?
Oh no, please let it rest in piece, the last one was a disgrace already.
Does nobody come up with new ideas?

Isn't making out with Megan Fox sufficient punishment for his transgressions?
