Tarnicus: I can't believe how much fun I'm having actually playing a game right now! This is even more fun that collecting games :P lol Will write a little about my experiences today once I've played a bit more :)
What game have you chose to play?

That's cool... one would guess until when?...

...oh, look over there! a shiny thing!

Tarnicus: Is there a way I can link my collection without typing it by hand?
If your gog wiki page is updated, then it is this:

Play the first Gothic. If you get used to old graphics, the game is simply awesome and immersive (lasts 40-60 hours, depends if you are a completionist or not)

Yeah I created that page after starting this thread and linked it earlier :)

GabiMoro: What game have you chose to play?
With so many suggestions for Disciples 2(something I've only looked at briefly) I decided to start with the first one. I own all 3 of them and definitely made the right choice starting with the first game. It is really easy to get into, the graphics are acceptable and functional, the music and sound effects are pleasing and the interface and strategy and RPG elements are exactly what I was looking for. It's easy to pick up and put down. I'm enjoying it so much that I've copied my saved game so I can play it at home as well :) I'm going to install it on my laptop and desktop so I can finally finish a game again!

I'm going to be a disciplined Disciple and stick to this one! Yes I am very prone to being distracted by the shiny thing but remembered how much I love playing games today :) It was a wonderful feeling to have return, that has only really emerged with online games since I started playing Ultima Online in 2000. I used to be such an avid gamer and find it a wonderful form of storytelling and exercise for the mind. I could list many reasons why I have struggled to start, let alone finish games but feel I am in the right headspace to get back to enjoying them again :)

Licurg: -Disciples 1 & 2
-King of Dragon Pass
-Eador: Genesis
So I'm in a bit of a quandary here - I can only mark one person as giving me a solution to my question. Licurg was the person who suggested the game I've ended up playing but didn't provide a review as requested. Fenixp provided the most comprehensive review for a game that I've never heard of, and if I had that game I would be playing that right now. So with that in mind, I'm going to split my "I owe you one" between both of you and will update this thread with my progress in the game and send a little thank you to both next payday.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions and reviews :)

You're supposed to take my word for it :P

Haha well I've played the first game extensively but not for a long time. I forgot how fun it was :) I haven't played either of your other suggestions but they were close to the top of my list to play as well. Am glad I chose Disciples to start with though :)

The second one is even better (tho I think the first has better music) . Make sure you play Eador and KoDP too , I actually like them more than the Disciples games .

Both look great but more complex than Disciples. The simplicity of Disciples is one of the reasons I ended up choosing it, as I wanted something I could get into quite easily. KoDP reminds me of the old KOEI games like Romance of the 3 Kingdoms 3 that I used to love, even though it appears quite different in many respects.

One game at a time and I'll be right back into gaming again :)

Part of my ritual with gaming is to always read the manual before playing, and fortunately Disciples was relatively short at 96 pages. I couldn't help but choose my favourite faction - the Undead. I'd like to try all 4 factions(which I have never done!) before I move onto the next game.

Eador is not like Rot3K , it's a little simpler . Basically, the world map part is a simplified version of Civilization, and the battles are like the HOMM games, but with individual units instead of stacks .

Not sure how to describe KoDP, as it's unlike anything else I've ever played .

Eador was inspired from Heroes 3 - one castle; totally unbalanced
i got so bored i soloed a ranger (at least in second game the arrows don't break)

I don't mind strategy games with a little unbalance as long as they are enjoyable but yeah it is a pretty important factor. Probably the reason I enjoy chess so much :)

darkplanetar - so what's your favourite strategy game in terms of balanced gameplay? I absolutely love Master of Magic and the Age of Wonders games but it's been that long that I can't recall how balanced the gameplay is.

Mentao: My advice, if you are still looking, would be RPG:

Dink Smallwood.

But if you have already played it, then I would recommend Sentinel Worlds I: Future Magic or Hard Nova
Hey thanks for these suggestions. Are you Karl Buiter or a fan? I used to have both games when I collected abandonware but never got round to playing them. I notice Starflight and Star Control 2 are mentioned in the wiki entry for both games and I played the crap out of those games in high school and loved them :)

Nah, anything you'd get me would go towards my backlog as I just have everything I want and still have quite a few games I want to finish left unfinished. I'm just glad to help and spread some Original War love, I have never seen a person to not like the game so I hope you won't be the first one to fill those shoes.

Well in that case I'll owe myself one with your suggestion and break one of my rules and buy Original War at full price for myself next pay and let you know what I think of it :) I can't believe I haven't heard of it - most likely due to it being RTS :)
