Hey there,
I blatently stole this from the GoG Update 1 thread but I thought it would be interesting to see what games people would use to clear their gaming palette and why. The why is esepcailly important so that we can learn about some other games that may appeal to us but we've never heard of it.
Mine would likely be The Wheel of Time. I'm a huge fan of the books (thought I never joined internet debates about them) and I came across the game being developed. The story is a little tangetial from the books but if you play it for inself rather than constantly comparing to the book series you'll find a deep, satisfying, shooter. Being able to pick an enemy up with a whirlwind and through them of a cliff is great fun and was done long before the gravity guns of current games. Having a spell that fires through everything (Literally. It will pass through enemies, friends, walls, the entire level) and hits for a lot of damage is also fun. There was a depth and complexity to the spell interactions that later games have forgotten. Someone fires a Seeker at you (it will chase you down forever getting faster and faster) you could acivate a Fire or Air shield, use Reflect to send to back the originator, you Fork if you accept the damage but then send it back anyway - this can be use in conjuction with Fire/Air Shield to negate the damage. You could use Absorb to absorb the projectile and pinch all uses of it from the bad guy and put them in your arsenal. You could use Swap to swap locations with someone so that the Seeker is now chasing them. And there are still several other ways to deal with it but I decided not to keep listing them :p
Any spell you have bad guys may have. And they will use them... Not always intellgently but not badly either.
I may change from "Emergency Game" to "Desert Island Harddrive" so that I can list other games later.

I've read most of the books, but evertime a new one comes out I've already forgotten half of what happened since the series is so freaking long. Is this an old game you're referring to or a new one?

Old. Came out about 1999.

1999 counts as old?
About a decade old :) 1999 works quite well.
Tetris Attack.
Civ IV with the Fall from Heaven mod. But of course, that's a fairly new game, so ... The Settlers. The original, and the best. And if you have a desert island companion and an extra mouse, it's even better. Split-screen multiplayer FTW. :)

Zeewolf: The Settlers. The original, and the best.

I respectfully disagree. Settlers II was the best. Which is also why that is the one they eventually did a remake of. But again, it's opinion.
Well, I'd go for some kind of tycoon game...
Transport Tycoon comes in mind, as IMO the best Tycoon game I've ever played...
Settlers 2: The 10th anniversary maybe, I like everything about this game...
Or, maybe, just maybe, Morrowind - am I allowed to take DVDs with plug-ins as well? :D
Hmm, it seems I'll have to toss a coin... Heads for TT, tails for Morrowind and the rest for Settlers II (see? fair fight)
-----------------------
Morrowind won!
So, why would I take Morrowind?
Cause I'd have the whole world on the island! ... Well, in fact Vvardenfell is island as well, so I'd have another island on the island, at least the virtual one is not so deserted :D Even vanilla Morrowind with expansion packs gives you hours and weeks and months of content to enjoy.
And, why did I give a chance to Transport Tycoon?
I think everyone who played it will admit it's one of the best, if not the best tycoon games ever created: Random map generator, huge possibilities, infinite replayability value...

If you go by internet years, it's prehistoric.

I guess that makes me a dinosaur?
I guess my "desert Island harddrive" would have to have the Ultima collection. (cheating slightly by taking a whole series!)

Mine would be a relatively stable version of Daggerfall. It's the entire world of Tamriel with enough content to keep someone busy on a deserted island for quite some time.

Good choice! I have it with the latest patch, and didn't have any problems (although only played through for the first few hours or so)

Yeah, so far it's the best TES game. It has a horse and carriage, the mark/recall spells, climbing(!), sooooo many more factions, the ability to become a werewolf, wereboar, or vampire, annnnnnd it has the whole of Tamriel to explore. I wish Bethesda would remake it.

I bought Morrowind on the basis of Daggerfall, and was slightly disappointed but enjoyed it, and then bought Oblivion and initially enjoyed it before getting increasingly frustrated with it. So by the looks of what they've done since, they have completely forgotten what they did in the past, unfortunately.
