I think HL:Source and CS:Source were only included free with the original release of HL2. Came with Lost Coast as well IIRC.
I would definetly recommend getting the original Half-Life. There are some amazing mods for it out there.
And if you (we) are lucky you (we) will get to play Half-Life for free (as long as you own a Source enginw game from Valve) in the latest Source engine build in the near future: Black Mesa
;)

Gundato: I vaguely recall people mentioning HL:Source had issues with player-height and jumps.

That is true. I have to cheat my way through, because a jump on ladder kill me few times.
Well, HL 1 isn't that bad, i finished it few months back and... the ending (Xan) is really boring. But opposing force is still totaly awesome! Really. Best of HL generation.
And well, pick Blue shift too. You'll play as a Barney :-)
Just go with the original and then install the Hi-Def Model Pack (works for HL, HL:OF and Blue Shift)
The Half Life games are great. I only completed Portal, HL2 and Episode 1 sometime last year, so I know that late to the party feel where you're trying to make "the cake is a lie" jokes and everyone else is just groaning because they are so over it. I still haven't finished Ep 2 though. I kind of got stuck on that part where you have to drive the car around and defend the base from all the incoming enemies. I put it down for a bit and have been meaning to get back to it.
I'm currently playing through Half-Life 1... using cheats willy-nilly since I care more for the "interactive" story than actual gameplay and difficulty. Next up is Blue-Shift and Opposing Force, then Half-Life 2 and the episodes.

Navagon: If you register the regular retail version of HL1 with Steam you get all kinds of bonuses, including all the expansions, CS, Day of Defeat, Team Fortress and a couple of others.

That's what I did, found a box with just Half-Life in a local store for about price of a cheap GOG, then registered that on Steam and got a crapload of stuff.

rewsan: Did you get the Orange Box? As HL Source came bundled with it.
avatar
Navagon: I don't have HL Source and I bought the Orange Box.

Same, bought Orange Box in a 30%-off sale on Steam a little while ago, Half-LifeL: Source wasn't in it.

It should also work by just registering any one of those titles too. A copy of Opposing Force should do the trick.

Drat: I still haven't beaten HL2 or played the episodes. The first time I got to the bit where the Combine are blasting with some big turret thingy from atop a building (not long after you rescue Barney from the snipers). The second time I only got to the first bit in Nova Prospect where you set up the turrets.
In both cases my progress was halted by my rampant OCD forcing me to do bits over and over again because I was sure something glitched or otherwise didn't go right. Eventually my attention gets grabbed by something else and I stop playing the game for ages, and eventually decide I may as well start over. For the same reason, my attempts at replaying HL1 have generally been halted at that big diagonal lift with all the headcrabs raining down from above. But at least I've played through that several times and the expansions more than once.
My finances are approaching the point where I can get a decent new computer, so I might as well wait for that so I can play HL2 in its full glory. Kind of well timed considering they've added in the Xbox achievements.

The segments with the turrets are the hardest in the game. Nasty stuff.
I must have started over on FFX-2 at least four times by now. Each time I'll start playing, have a good time, and then I'll check a walkthrough for something and realise I missed out on two thirds of the content, promptly losing the will to go on. Each time I resolve that next time I'll keep a 100% checklist next to me as I play, and each time I make the same basic mistakes.
Now that I think about it, I think I've resolved to replay about half my backlog from the beginning since most of them have fairly intricate stories and I don't want to miss out on anything. The exception would be FFT, of course, since you can replay every cutscene from the in-game menu there. (But not the in-fight dialogue).
But, yeah, The Orange Box. It holds up amazingly well - it's barely aged at all. I know a lot of people who only played through the games in it quite recently.

You're right sorry, I've got both and forgot what game with what.

No, that's one that doesn't work. I already bough a "Half-Life: Generation" pack back when it was relatively new, that originally contained Half-Life, Counter-Strike, and Opposing Force, I've lost the first two discs (and the codes) some years ago and only have Opposing Force left. Steam doesn't accept that code, there's even a support entry saying just that.
Of course, if there ever was a box containing only Opposing force, that one may very well work if the code is in another format. I wouldn't know.

You are six, eh?
I'm kinda like 12... Playing through Starcraft's campaign right now. Hopefully I will finish Terran tonight. The story is nice so far. :)
Aha! Sounds like a regular to our TF2 server has a HL Retail key they don't need anymore. When he turns up again, I should have Half Life.
@TheJoe DON'T TOUCH ANYTHING. Anything you do could alter the future in ways you couldn't imagine.

It was the standalone version I used. Or was it Blue Shift? One of the two. :P
I played through HL2 not long after the orange box came out and a friend gifted me his spare copy, I was unimpressed. I honestly don't get what the hype was about, the gameplay was dull and generic, the story was average, the graphical innovations mostly involved things being shiny and the physics were interesting but ultimately an overused gimmick.
Now Portal on the other hand, that one I can see where they hype came from
