Kabus: First DirectDrive then FilePlanet. What is next?
I was so pissed off at this Direct2Drive bullshit, all my games dissapeared and tech support has been "looking into the problem" for a while. I only had three games backed up, lost some 300 dollars worth of games. Fuckers.

Aaron86: Didn't Fileplanet always require you to create an account to download files? Because it always seemed to for me, which turned me off.

Too bad for everyone else who used Fileplanet a lot.
Not always, no. But it was several years ago that they did introduce that. At least I think I downloaded stuff from there many years ago before being required to make an account (which I found annoying back then too), but my memory may very well not be completely intact..

Navagon: On the bright side it represents the demise of another part of the Murdoch empire. On the down side, while there are other download sites, for many things Fileplanet seemed like the only option.
EXACTLY.

Here's hoping someone... saves everything.

I just hope this isn't all down to some copyright bullshit. Not that I'm sorry to see another part of the Murdoch empire sink. But ideally for the right reasons...

Yep, they're taking it down. One of the largest patch and demo collecting sites will not be updated any longer, and who knows how long it'll take before they decide to wipe it from the internet.

Because FUCK THE USERS, that's why.
That sucks, but as someone pointed out theres still GH.
Never used it in years although i did use it a lot in the late 90s for mods for my games. Shame to see a bit of history gone but considering it wasnt being updated much dont think it will impact the gaming public.
Because cloud computing is the future, indeed....

Do you really think it is their responsibility to host patches and shit forever? Really?

Within reason, yes.

There's a lot of stuff that isn't available anywhere else.

Well, this sucks :( I've been trying to maintain a list of links to demos for gog games over on the wiki and guess which website hosts most of the demos? Fileplanet. That's not to say that some of the demos can't be found elsewhere but I believe that there were some that I could only find there. I thought about trying to back up the demos for the gogs that are on fileplanet but then I realized:

1. I don't have a fast internet speed and some of the demos are quite large
2. I don't have enough hard drive space to back up the demos
3. Due to the whole mega upload copy infringement deal even if I could somehow download all the demos I'd be afraid to upload them elsewhere
This help anybody?

The queue was pretty bad. I quit using the site several years ago when spyware apps starting throwing flags at it. It was the only "legitimate" gaming site that would get flagged. And after cleanup, it would reflag every time I visited that site.

I've also pretty much quit playing demos. Its become much easier to tell whether I'd like a game or not over the years.

For downloads, I expect community sites to have game specific downloads or I use ModDB. I don't think I've even visited Fileplanet in over 5 years. I suspect I'm not the only one, else they would have reason to keep it up.
For Fun: check sites similar to GOG....
