Will I like Might and Magic (specifically 6)? As a rule I used to avoid first person RPGs from the old days because Eye of the Beholder really put me off. Well recently I forced myself to finally play Ultima Underworld which I've had forever and really liked how everything was much less obtuse despite the age.

After looking for another game Might and Magic seems the closest thing to Ultima Underworld outside of the future Looking Glass games, Arx Fatalis and Deus Ex. Now I'd just spring and get the 6 games but I can't get games right now unless I know that there is a decent chance I'll like it and the last thing I want is another game as obtuse as Eye of the Beholder.

Might & Magic 6 tends to get annoying when you're a low-level character with tons and tons of combat.
The earlier ones feel really dated so you may or may not appreciate them. You will likely enjoy the later instalments (3-6.)

EDIT: Have you tried watching some walkthroughs to get a feel for the gameplay? That might help.

Yeah. The game itself looks cool but the gameplay is something I'm not sure on because some people seem to play it real time while others do turn based.

M&M are closer to Eye of the Beholder than to Ultima Underworld, imo.

Have you tried "The elder scrolls : arena" or "Daggerfall", or even "Morrowind", or "Drakensang"?

The game is wonderful fun in a sort of open world where you go from town to town talking to people and buying equipment to use in the nearby semi-linear dungeons or to fight the wandering enemies between towns/etc.

I recall fondly sneaking into this dwarven forge area and finding this amazing lava river.....it seemed too much a challenge for one of my level but then I got some fireprotect spell or item or some such and/or some levitation ability and got to the end and found an amazing item.

Good times...that, and the Lich King guy in one area.

It's open ended, but the areas are easy to navigate between towns and encounters if one makes a small 12x12 map and marks each major area(when you enter a new one or go back to an old one the area name is listed onscreen) in each square with footnotes if needed.

The lack of a good map, for one. And the magic turning around squares for another. :P

Good game though....but very hard to navigate in places. I loved finding keys and such though and reading words on walls and solving puzzles, etc.

Lack of map and magic was part of game and fun in some way. I was drawing map on piece of paper, just like in real RPG :P

Well, maybe just todays games have just spoiled you :P
Stupid formatting. I'm just bolding the original post and putting my response under.

Sounds good enough to convince me to get a M&M game but how is 7 in the navigation regard? I'm going back and forth on getting 6 or 7 and if one is much easier to navigate the choice is simple.

Have some rep too, will help get you closer to 0.

Same reason I don't like Stonekeep, it is too samey and lacks a strong map. It isn't a problem for most people but my sense of direction is terrible. In Ultima Underworld I just pull up the map and boom I can see where I'm going or even jot down notes (love this feature).

The combat is another reason, I didn't like Morrowind because of the same reason actually. If I swing a sword and hit I expect it to hit a reasonable amount. I blame that on the AD&D rules though.

Morrowind I have and I'm not a fan. Arena I wasn't a fan of and I have yet to try Daggerfall. Drakensang is on my to play list for sure though, been waiting on a sale forever to pick up the two games on Steam.

Nah, I just don't like games feeling like work too much, and sometimes it's hard to find a pen. ;)

To be honest i'd get both, or at least get 6 first to play them in order. 6 is the first one to show major changes in the game's look&feel vs the Xeen look of M&M 4-5, and this changes even more after 8 when 9 came out. Play 6 then 7......plus wiith 6 you get 5 other games to dabble with in the M&M 6 pack. :)

----------------

Also yes this is what I like about UU 1/2/, too....the in-game map with annotation feature. The same thing is in Arx Fatalis as well, to an extent......not so much in Eye....which also as I said has those squares where you can be turned around in direction and get confused unless you constantly monitor the compass.

So I take it you already played Arx Fatalis? To me that' seems like the closest thing to UU1&2 that I can think of. Actually I bought UU specifically because I liked Arx Fatalis and I love them both. To tell the truth, I also liked Eye of the Beholder though (I probably wouldn't draw the maps by hand anymore like I used to :D but I think I've got a decent sense of direction now.) Arx Fatalis also reminded me a bit of Eye of the Beholder, because of the dungeon crawling and puzzles but it's much much closer to UU.

So far I never really got into the M&M series; I tried VI for a while but ultimately I found it too open and too heavy on the hack and slash side, you can spend hours and hours just killing monsters in a sandbox type game, while the thing I actually liked about Arx Fatalis (and probably UU, too) is that your world is limited to the dungeons, that while free exploration is encouraged there's still some kind of linearity and that your aim is survival, not wiping out whole tribes of monsters one after the other. ;)

Arx Fatalis is probably my favorite first person RPG from the early 2000's (yes even over Deus Ex). I'm in the same boat as you regarding UU. Beat Arx Fatalis and when you hear spiritual successor the curiosity gets the better of you, especially because companies seem to be allergic to this type of game anymore...

I'm getting the pack on Monday then. Hopefully that announcement means massive GoG sale in which case I'll get the 6 pack, play a bit of 6 and if I really like it grab 7 too. Otherwise just 6 for now. Thanks for the help.

I remember Enigmatic T saying it was coming (with Simcity and more Ultima) so I would expect it in August if the announcement for EA is anything to go on. Will keep an eye open for this one since it looks pretty cool, notice its the same developer as Eye of the Beholder so maybe they learned to make the games a bit less obtuse :P.

<joke>If you need map to play so you can not be good old gamer as 99% of good old games has no map!</joke> ;)

But to tell you something serious, if you want to play in EoB style and need map, try Dungeon Hack. It's missing some "deep story" as it is pure H&S but it still uses EoB engine and HAS a map ;) Also it is replayable as dungeons are generated at random.

But some of the games don't NEED a map as they are a genre that doesn't use one or the areas are linear. :P

Huh? What? Why... oh why... oh wait, you already explained above. Carry on then, nothing to read here.

Just kidding :-)

EDIT: If you do not mind consulting to walkthrough, there are cluebooks for Eye of the Beholder series in replacementdocs.
