Sidenote, I bought the game and 10 minutes later I got a call from my credit card company saying there's possible fraud and an investigation is pending. Not sure what that means. (I downloaded the game successfully but it's not working at all.)

Your credit card company might be extra sensitive to international purchases? (GOG's based in Polan).

Well if a game simply doesn't work, is it impossible to get a refund? I've already done plenty of research as my original post explains, I've tried to get my original game CDs to work with no success.

The only reason I bothered to buy the game again is for the peace of mind that it works on modern machines. This is extremely frustrating.

I have a copy of Icewind Dale running on my Vista Ultimate 64-bit machine.

Does the GoG version come with Heart of Winter?

I have ID + HoW + TotL installed, patched, probably community patched, and working just fine.

Mine doesn't run in compatibility mode, but if you have multiple screens I would recommend disabling the extras.

Don't worry, happened before. I'm sure there's a solution. Make another thread with a title like "Icewind Dale not working" or something along those lines, and post in the OP what the game does and your specs (CPU, graphics card, OS, etc.) and we'll help you solve it.

Don't be angry, all problems have a solution :) I have over 2 dozen games on GOG, and all of them work fine. A couple of them I had to tweak a little, but they always worked fine in less than 24 hours after I got them.

Here are a handful of possible solutions:
Install the Widescreen mod (issue might be resolution dependent)
Change to 16bit colours in Windows
Enable/disable openGL acceleration in the config menu
Change to software acceleration for all individual options in the config menu

Don't forget, try switching the game to windowed mode (alt-enter should work) and you should be able to move the game window and find the message box to read what it contains.

Another thing - all Infinity Engine games (and almost every other pre-XP game) need to be able to write in their own folder, Windows Vista and 7 has a problem with this if you install the games to Program Files, so try installing the game elsewhere or running as Administrator.
Several banks automatically flag transactions to GOG simply because they're incorporated in Cyprus (also, their offices are in Poland, and the payments go through the UK). Just try to make them understand that GOG.com is a respectable company, and you shouldn't have more trouble.

No I'm really bad with computers and people keep throwing foreign acronyms at me. The only reason I bought the game on this site is so I could avoid exactly this. Like I said I already had 2 physical copies of the game but they require someone tech savy to get running.

I'm just too angry to think straight and I can't deal with this stuff. (I know I'm being childish but I'm just going through a lot right now)

When you installed the game, did you choose where it's installed, or just installed it in Program Files, like it is by default? If so, just uninstall the game, then when you open the installer again, press "Options"(little grey button on the left of the installer screen) and choose an unprotected path, like "C:\Games\Icewind Dale" . If that doesn't work, we'll find a solution.

Have you tried any of Afnord's solutions, a few posts above?

All the Infinity Engine games work out of the box on Vista 64 bit. You are suffering some sort of Video issue most likely. I would post your problem in the Icewind Dale Forum as it is active and the folks are very knowledgeable. State that you need specific instructions and list your system specs especially video.
