helsing7: Well its problem asked before but I'm seeing to keep finding the same post over and over and don't know if they still work or not but here goes anyway. Anybody know how to make icewind dale movies bigger in size i get black box around the edge of my window top bottom left and right on small screen in the center for the movie when playing lol. And maybe bigger fonts too. I was checking and seen they where some made but they say don't work anymore what ones still work?
Do you have this problem only with the movies in Icewind Dale, and during the gameplay itself you don't have black bars on top and bottom (only on the sides)?
Then I think it is as it is supposed to be. The game was originally designed for the "square" 4:3 monitors, and games from that era many times liked to mimic widescreen movies, by creating fake "black widescreen bars" on the top and bottom for the in-game movies.
I personally found those fake "black widescreen bars" in the FMV parts quite stupid. They could have just as well played all the game movies in 4:3 full-screen. Some games even went so far that whenever there was a non-interactive part in the game (even if it was created with the game engine), black "widescreen bars" would magically appear on top and bottom, as a hint to the player that this is a movie part that you are supposed to only watch. Silly. Were people really that accustomed to seeing black bars on top and bottom in movies, that game movies would have to fake that same unwanted visual glitch as well?
Anyway, as you are now playing the 4:3 aspect ratio game on a 16:9 or 16:10 widescreen monitor:
1. You get black bars on the left and right sides. This is quite normal as the game was designed to a monitor of a different aspect ratio. The only way to "overcome" this is either to tell the game/graphics drivers to stretch the game horizontally so that it fills the whole 16:9 screen, but then the image will be distorted (everything looks fatter, circles look like ellipsoids etc). There may also be some third-party widescreen modifications which change the game to widescreen mode without distorting the picture, not sure. But someone already suggested they don't affect the movie parts, which makes sense.
2. On top of that, you get those fake "widescreen bars" on the top and bottom. Hence, now it looks like the movies are played in a small box where there are black bars on all sides.
I think the "best" you could achieve was to stretch the game screen horizontally so that those movies (or rest of the game) wouldn't have black bars on the side, but you would still have the fake black bars on the top and bottom. And the graphics/movies would be distorted horizontally. I personally would play the game as you are seeing it now, without stretching it horizontally.
Or, if your monitor or graphics drivers had some kind of "zoom function" to zoom the monitor image without changing the aspect ratio, maybe that would work too, without distorting (stretching) the image. But then you'd have to switch it off when the actual gameplay starts, otherwise you'd miss part of the gameplay screen on the top and the bottom, which are zoomed beyond the screen borders.
Or then connect your PC to an old 4:3 monitor and play it there instead. :)
