Matewis: There is a mine house across from my parents' home
Just curious: what is 'mine house'?

Elmofongo: I think you should be concerned if the robbers come back for revenge, who knows they might bring Molotov Cocktails...
Make mine Molotov (™).

The world's premier cocktail when throwing surprise parties.

Seriously, I'm sure they're more than well aware of what can be done, if anything besides coping, in this situation. There really is no need to speculate wildly about possible future scenarios.

Barefoot_Monkey:
I'm really sorry to hear about your dreadful and shocking experience. Please allow me to express my most sincere admiration for what you did to keep your family safe. You're an incredibly brave person. :)

Barefoot_Monkey, you and your father are badasses.
:-|

Glad to read the happy ending, but so worried about the situation: things like that simply shouldn't happen.
holy shit dude.that's some story.and I thought when I was robbed it was bad(the dude just pointed a gun at me and demanded my phone).really glad to hear that you and your family are well.

Barefoot_Monkey: I came home from work this evening. After checking that the road was empty and well-illuminated I opened my gate and drove my car in. As I was entering I saw headlights at the top of the road so I quickly stopped my car inside and ran to lock the gate, just in case the arriving car contained criminals. It did, and they had sprinted toward the gate and arrived just as I had closed it, so I decided there was no time to lock it and turned and ran around the house, shouting. The front door is always locked. I passed the glass patio door, which thankfully was clearly closed with the trellidoor clearly shut.

I ran around the house into an old broken sauna at the back which we used as a storeroom, because it seemed like the perfect place to toss away my housekeys - my family is inside the house so my top priority was keeping my keys from the robbers. Three of them - one with a loaded gun - cornered me in there and tried to overpower me together; fortunately they couldn't. Every time they threatened me or told me to do something or tried to assault me I resisted, stayed exactly where I was, and simply said "Please leave" as loudly as I could. Eventually they demanded my keys and I told them I'd already thrown them in the garden. They got nervous - probably because of all the time that had already passed since the commotion started - and ran off. I hoped that everyone in the house had heard the noise and were safely locked inside, and I hopped onto the roof and waited there (the only thing I could think of to do at that point).

Unfortunately they hadn't realised what was going on, and my father (70) had wandered out onto the driveway. The fleeing robbers tried to attack him from behind, but he fought them off without taking any injuries and they ran out the gate. One fired two shots at him. He dived for cover, and one bullet went straight through his trousers, barely grazing the inside of his thigh.

So in the end we all made it out alive, with no real injuries and nothing stolen. But... wow.

tburger: Just curious: what is 'mine house'?
Its a house that belongs to the local mine (big chrome seam of sorts near where I'm from) that are available for some of the mine's employees. I'm not sure exactly who or how but i suspect it is for managers and such. People don't tend to live in a mine house for too long : one family moves in for 3/4 years and then moves out, next family moves in for 1 year and moves out, and so forth. They make good targets because a family moving in is unlikely to spend a lot of money on the house such as adding extra bars on the windows, installing electric fencing or whatever.

I had no idea that life is so dangerous over there.
I'm glad that nobody got hurt physically .
Hopefully this won't happen again.

Matewis: snip
ok, thx for clarification
You are a brave man, sir. I salute you and your family.
Oh my God! I've heard stories about South Africa and rise of crime but this actually happening to you is like happening in my town.
You did the right thing, keeping your cool and not surrendering. I have heard this is the only thing that can make them go away. To see someone more determined than them. (I'm not sure I could do the same)
Some people even say that if they are robbed, they don't want to face the robbers, just let them take what they want and leave.

I'm very happy that no one got hurt, even after they shoot their gun. Dear God, it's so easy for a robbery to turn into a homicide. And they shoot your dad when they were leaving. I can't imagine what they would gain from that........
I suppose after that you called the police. They should patrol your area more often to discourage robbers to do this again.
[hug]
Damn, I'm glad everything turned out okay! And kudos on fighting off armed(!!!) robbers. I'd probably just piss my pants or something :/

Unfortunately, it is. And it might very well be our future too, if and when our lifestyle collapses / social system becomes unpayable.

I'm glad you got out of it without major prejudice. Humans,...

Elmofongo: I am serious
I was aware of that.
I was just pointing out that if someone gets in danger you shouldn't go and try to scare him with prospect of bigger danger awaiting ahead.

Pheace: This part in itself was already a completely different world for me. That's what I see in movies, not what my life is like. Kudos on your actions and good to hear you all got through relatively well.

P1na: This. So much this.
Seconded.

A curious question, why would you put up a fight if one of them had a loaded gun? Granted, as mentioned, I've never been in any situation like that but I wouldn't want to upset the robbers in favour of "overpower" them if I would be outnumbered. I suppose it might be different depending on where you are too.
