Now i need some expert advice on what game i should buy, as u know gog has several in the genre. The games I'm looking on (plz recommend others aswell if necessary!) are: the Krondor games, ultima underworld, stonekeep, ishar and realms of arkania, just so u know what genre im looking into. For excellent RPGs, I'd also recommend taking a look at Planescape Torment and Gothic, even though they may not be what you are looking for. But Torment does have one of the best settings and story I've seen, and not sure if any other rpg comes close to it.

Note that Daggerfall was re-released as freeware a while back; DaggerfallSetup gets it up and running in a couple of clicks much like GOG's shiny installers. It's well worth a look. :)
I don't think you'd be all too happy with Stonekeep - yet. And that's not only because it's rather light on RPG gameplay (no classes, no char. creation). Stonekeep is a rather strange product. Its development began while grid-based dungeons were still en vogue. At the end, they were not so anymore (Ultima Underworld was one game that was released during work on Stonekeep). Yet, the game looks great and has generally a high production value. Also, it has some good puzzles and campy (in a funny way) acting.
I can definitely recommend Stonekeep as a game as such. But it's probably not really what you're looking for.
Classic? Try the Might & Magic 6-pack. Start with #3 (Isles of Terra) and play 4 & 5 together (Clouds of Xeen & Darkside of Xeen form World of Xeen and open up more quests). Unfortunately, M&M 1 & 2 just completely pale in comparison by today's standards, but M&M 3-5 have aged quite nicely.

1 and 2 are classics!

Orryyrro: 1 and 2 are classics!
I loved them when I played them, but by today's standard of "classics" I just don't feel like they hold up. Story was great, but the gameplay was hard & the graphics on #1 are awful. Still remains one of my favorite series, though.

My main point was, I don't want Oslin007 to buy the pack, start #1 & get discouraged, then go to #2 & feel even more discouraged, and then give up on the whole thing...especially when #3-5 are still so awesome.

Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 with the Baldur's Gate Trilogy mod. The mod combines BG1, TotSC and BG2 into one epic adventure using the BG2 engine. And when you finish that, you can import your character into Throne of Bhaal.

While this isn't in a first person perspective like many of the games you listed, this is one of the truly great and epic crpgs. The games provide a wide array of role playing choices and many side quests making you feel like you are part of a living world.

Though, I will admit, since the game uses ADnD rules, the early parts are rather unforgiving since your characters have very small health pools to start out with.

I will also second Planescape: Torment. It is one of the more unique settings out there.
One word - Planescape: Torment
Great answers all around in here. The Baldur's Gate Trilogy is a lot work to get running, but totally worth it. Planescape: Torment is also a great game.

Whatever you do, I would not recommend Realms of Arkania as your first step into the classic CRPGs. They are pretty good, but tend to require a lot of micro-management that someone not familiar with RPGs might find tedious.
If you want a RPG "à la Daggerfall" (First Person, 3D, Real Time Combat), go for Gothic I & Gothic II, Ultima Underworld (I&II), Arx Fatalis.

If graphics is an issue, buy Arx fatalis before UU.

If you "just" want a RPG and don't care if it is first person or not, I ll join everyone in suggesting Planescape.
The Realms of Arkania games available here are detailed tactical RPGs that may be up your alley.

I believe there is a guide on how to set up Baldur's Gate Trilogy in the games forum. And really I didn't find it that difficult. It took some time to run, but the setup is as easy as telling the installer where BG1 and BG2 are installed and selecting a few other options.
thanks for all the replies! just want to inflickt that im a TOTAl noob on classical rpgs; have played baldurs gate, fallout, planescape (if only a little - didnt really get into it, shoudl i try again?) as well as arx fatalis, gothic!!! which i just trieed a few wweeks ago and got totally blown away, like the best series ever!! I've never played the Ultima Underworld or Krondor series, so I don't feel qualified to answer, honestly. I will say that if you enjoy the role-playing/quest-solving aspect of RPGs then Planescape is definitely worth looking at again. But, if you want an RPG with a focus on battles/encounters it is probably not what you're looking for.
