I was looking through my discs for AvP2 (didn't find it, no idea where it is, I only found the first game meh)
Anyhow, I decided to try some older games to see if any of them would run under Vista 64.
Warm Up!
The whole system crashed when I tried to open/autorun the disc. Not going to try again.
Moto Racer 1, I am going to try later.
GTA2, I remembered I don't really like GTA games apart from VC.
Soldier of Fortune Special Edition, I am going to try it later.
Necronomicon, same as above, it should work, it's not THAT old.
Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb, I will try later, should work, but I don't remember if it is asking for a CDkey or not, I hope not cause I have no idea where it is.
Wizardry 8 v1.2.4, I found 3 discs, I hope it isn't 4 as I remember and no cdkey, no idea where it is either., I will try it later.
SpellCross, the setup menu appears but nothing seem to happen when I click on install. That's for the w95 setup file. For the DOS it doesn't run (16bit and all that). The only big disappointment since it is an AWESOME game.
Age of Wonders, I installed and patched it to 1.36. Supports many resolutions including my native 1920x1200, but things are too small, I will try another one later. The game seems to be working so far. Still looks, GUI, sound and music feel as good as they did when I first got the game. I started an "evil" campaign to eradicate the humans and their allies.
GP500 (Microprose), supports resolution up to 1600x1200. Looks surprisingly good considering its 11-12 years existence. Very fluid. Minimal support for my xbox 360 controller, only the 4 top buttons work and the left stick. The stick works as older joysticks would in these games, move the stick forward and speed up etc. Still, the control with the 360 pad is a must. Keyboard implementation is ok, but just not as quick or fluid enough for this game. Oh, and the game is as difficult as I remember it to be. It needs a masochist to play, I will still try it more later.
Wizardry 8 installed fine (3 discs btw). The problem is when I start the game the mouse moves for a split second then nothing. Same with the keys. I can hear the music playing, sound from the waves, and even footsteps of my band when I press the appropriate keys, but the screen is frozen.
Hmm...
I think the name of the topic should be: I am going try some older games later :)
As of now, it's not much to comment...
Hmm, AoW. I have the sequel, need to find the first one somewhere. GOG, a little help, please?
Oddly enough, I wouldn't be surprised if many of the people who buy older games they already own are doing it because they've lost the manuals where the CD keys were printed, more than just compatibility or install issues. Them things had a tendency to get pulled out of the box and then I'd forget to put them back in.
That's why I keep a spreadsheet with all my activation codes and license keys on my backup drive. As soon as I get a new game requiring one, I add it to the list so I never have to worry about losing it. I have keys on it going back almost 10 years now, some of them for software that I no longer have the original media for.

DotEmu has Moto Racer. So if you can't get your copy working and you'd love a working version of the game then at least you've got somewhere to get it.

I had a text file like that. It was lost, together with the 3 copies on other drives. How, unknown. But it lead me to never buy again retail games unless I have no other choice.
I tried to make Soldier of Fortune (Platinum edition apparently, not special) to work. Intalls fine but running is so far impossible. It crashes with sof exe fault appcrash etc.
Too bad cause I was in the mood for a fun FPS now.
I tried all I could, SOF doesn't run.
Wizardry 8 on the other hand...
DX 7 meant the game had the problem I mentioned earlier. OpenGL the graphics were corrupted. Software mode meant graphics corruption and slo w. Solution found with the use off DX6. The graphics are not as bright as in the DX7 mode, but at least the game plays.
The whole thing reminds me why I was always in favour of 2D over 3D. 2D can look good and play after many years without any serious issue. 3D might look good now, but it will look crap 10 years from now and it might not even run properly.
Meh.
I am thinking of playing Dungeon Master (ST).

I thought Age of Wonders supported zoom, how can it be "too small". The interface is too small?

Zoom? How? I will check it later.
