My insta-buy list would be
Bard's Tale 1-3
BioForge
Crusader: No Remorse
Crusader: No Regret
Cybermage: Darklight Awakening (criminally underrated)
Dune 2
Dune 2000
Dungeon Keeper (with expansion)
Dungeon Keeper 2
The Lost Files of Sherlock Holmes both of them (I would sell my first born child to get Case of the Serrated Scalpel)
Magic Carpet 1 and 2
Populous: The Beginning
Privateer 1 and 2
Sim City 2000
Strike Commander
System Shock 1 and 2
Trespasser: Jurassic Park (I know it was buggy and flawed but I still want to try it)
Ultima 1-9
Wing Commander 1-4 + prophecy
Then I would be broke :-)

FlameWhip: Trespasser: Jurassic Park (I know it was buggy and flawed but I still want to try it)

Trespasser looked amazing. The physics were equally impressive. In fact, in many ways it was way ahead of its time. Some games still don't show its level of innovation.
But dammit, the aiming was appalling. Absolutely appalling! When picking up a gun, you had to make sure it was dead centre in your screen. Where it was on the screen when you picked it up is where it will be aimed when you fire it. So anything other than dead centre meant you could be aiming damn near anywhere, without a hope of hitting anything.
But anyway. As a licensed game, I don't think it would be a good idea for it to turn up here. I doubt EA are less pissy about licensing than Codemasters are.

Another Cybermage fan! There aren't many of us about. I always loved that game. It did for Doom, what Half-Life did for Quake, only better.
No one has mentioned Savage Empire or Martian Dreams yet which always get forgotten with every Ultima compilation. Martian Dreams especially deserves a re-release as it is easily one of the best Ultima games in its own right. I would also like to see Lands of Lore 1-3 and Legend Of Kyrandia 1-3.

I'm surprised that no one mentioned the Lands of Lore series. These are excellent dungeon crawlers (even if the third one is a bit buggy and rushed).
Oh, and Battle for Middle-Earth is based on the movies. The characters and locations are modeled after the movies, the music is partly lifted from the movies and some of the movies actors are voicing characters in the game. It's still an excellent game, nonetheless.
Maybe what you're thinking about is War of the Ring. Not sure it's EA, though.
Crusader: No Remorse
Crusader: No Regret
Dune 2
Genewars
Syndicate + Syndicate: American Revolt
Syndicate Wars
Only things that comes to mind:
Entire catalog of Origin Systems
Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri & Alien Crossfire expansion
Well I was going to post a link last night but the anniversary promo started and the servers gound to a halt

I played Tresspasser for the first time a few months back. After installing some fan made patches to up the resolution and REALLY increase the draw distance.
All i can say is, WOW. That game was SO FAR ahead of it's time... talk about crazily ambitious. With the draw distance upped you can really see how awesome the levels are... full size open world areas including whole towns and mountains. That combined with the open-world setting, physics puzzles, "not all combat" gameplay, carrying only 2 weapons, etc... It's almost like Farcry / Deus Ex / Half Life 2.... but years in advance.
And the first time you run into a T-Rex.... that scares the pants off you.
Of course, the AI is broken, the physics are broken, and the controls are broken.. but it's still pretty fun if you are the kind of gamer who can overlook flaws.
I recommend IGNORING the arm (shudder). YOu actually almost never need to manipulate it... just keep it centered.
Fun times...
Trespasser is a fantastic piece of technology. It's obscurity is disappointing.
1998 was quite a year for the FPS genre.
Short list, but...
Dungeon Keeper series
Crusader series
Syndicate series

I have to agree. It's really a shame that at the time it was so unfinished. It could have set a new benchmark. But instead that was left to Half Life.
Did they ever fix the aiming? That was always the worst thing about the game. If it wasn't for that I'd have been more inclined to persevere with it. But it got the better of me in the end.
Definitely the NFS-series before it took a shitdive. Everything up to and counting NFS Underground 2 should do it.
Oh and Black & White too. It's probably already been said though.

Agreed.
I quite liked NFS: Carbon. Most Wanted, Pro Street and Undercover all sucked though.
