I had a weird dream that I really need to share with someone... so here goes:
I entered a cruise ship... a pretty neat looking one where the deck had a rather complicated and confusing structure with many narrow corridors that connected small areas with nice seats where one could relax and talk. Anyway, after making just two steps on the ship I heard a guy in an expensive suit talking to a glamorous woman wearing a black dress... about Steam. It was Gabe Newell! Well, in my dream he looked more like Gordon Freeman without his glasses and with a touch of former Nike CEO Phil Knight but still, it was Gabe Newell! He was listing all the great things about Steam, how much it has done for the industry and all its great features. I interrupted him saying "it's also DRM". He looked at me, a little surprised but with a smug grin and replied "yeah, but that's a necessity considering all the online features it provides for games". I tried to be a little less aggressive but said: "well, Half-Life 2 originally didn't have any online features..." He clearly got a little annoyed and angry so I tried to cool the atmosphere a little. "...but yeah, as more games were released and features added to Steam..." and I continued to mumble something until he put his arm on the lady's back and they both just walked off.
I aimlessly continued to walk around the ship and then I stumbled upon Alexander Brandon in a rather dark corridor. You see, recently (in real life, not in the dream) I put a piece of mine online which a few people have praised and compared to the soundtracks of Deus Ex and Unreal which kinda made me proud. Now here I was standing in front of the great Alexander Brandon - but since I have no idea what he really looks like my mind just made him look like JC Denton. He just stood there, silently looking at me and then said: "It does not sound like Deus Ex. You hear me? Not at all!" And then he turned around and walked off. I just stood there, waiting for him to disappear behind a corner and started walking in the opposite direction.
I continued to walk around the ship and arrived at one of those sitting areas where I found Gabe Newell (still looking like Gordon Knight or Phil Freeman, whichever one you prefer) sitting alone and either worried or just deeply lost in thoughts. I sat down on the seat next to him and just grabbed some cocktail that was standing on the table between us. He silently turned his head towards me with a very annoyed expression on his face. I was kinda apologetic and explained that I really meant to express my respect for Steam and the options it provides for developers and gamers. His face did lighten up a for a second but as soon as he noticed that I wasn't gonna tell him anything new he clearly got bored and annoyed, just waiting for me to leave. Suddenly the glamorous woman from before passed by, he hastily got up, followed her into a corridor and the two of them disappeared in a cabin.
So I was left sitting alone with my (or someone else's) drink there. Out of nowhere a friend of mine came running towards me (a real life friend), as always wearing jeans and a purple hoodie. He yelled: "Dude, Steam just added DRM free installer downloads!" He squeezed a tablet into my hands and ran off. I looked at the screen which showed the Steam client and indeed - I saw a new downloader tab specifically for standalone installers. And my first thought was: "This can't be good for GOG."
And that ends the relevant portion of the dream. When I woke up and started remembering all the details I was surprised to say the least. Particularly about Alexander Brandon being an asshole. I find the whole thing pretty hilarious, although I was a little shocked that in my sleep I actually think (and so clearly) about digital distribution. :P
