Will the Swedish viewers support Russia or Finland, considering The Incident yesterday in the SWE-RUS match? Probably neither, I guess.

DieRuhe: In all seriousness, I'm curious: are there so many other types of hockey that "ice" has to be used? I mean, ok, field hockey or whatever it's called, but when one hears "hockey", is there a plethora of other things it could be?

If the referees were actual professionals and knew what they were doing, the final score would've been completely different. Enjoy the ill-gotten gold Russia, and know that everyone else in the world knows who the real winner should have been.
I used to love the NHL and was leaning towards Detroit during the Federov, Shanahan and Lindstrom era (I didn't google those so may have got it completely wrong).

Unfortunately, it's only aired in the UK on subscription channels so have lost touch.

I enjoyed what I saw of the Olympics but was wondering whether that or the World Championships are more prestigious.

The Olympics, because those are only once every four years, and all the best players are usually there. The playoffs are still ongoing in the NHL, and there's no way the teams would let their key players to participate in the World Championship if they're still fighting for the Stanley Cup. That said, most countries (at least in Europe) still keep the World Championship in high regard. Too bad the final match was such a fiasco because of the referees.

tinyE: I'm just having some fun. :P I don't even know if the NHL allows any of their players at the World Championships; they are about to pull them from the Olympics.
And ruin the only occasion where the most talented Canadian players actually play for a Canadian team?

Talk about byting the country that feeds them...

DProject: While the best players are still over the sea playing for the Stanley Cup, the World Championship games are still a big deal for a lot of folk back here in the old country. Especially to us Finns. So while you're technically correct saying "how come these are the world championship games, when the best players aren't even around", have some respect. These ARE the Stanley Cup games to us. NHL is just a capitalist league. This is the battle of the nations.
I'm with you on this one. Olympic Hockey > NHL at this point for me.

More irony. The Captain of the Montreal Canadiens is......American. :P

Not saying you don't have some good players, but if Americans strictly played for American teams and Canadians strictly played for Canadian teams, we both knows on which side of the border Cups would be won most years.

But, we have 1/10 of your population so that would be bad for business. It's more lucrative if American teams win most years in order to attract potential US fans. The NHL is about business first and foremost after all.

That is a stupid question, the U.S. wouldn't have single Cup and that's a fact! :D

We always have the Miracle on Ice.

That is such a great movie too. They really could have screwed up putting that on the big screen but it's beautiful. Most "true" sports stories have factual holes that you could drive a truck through and are clearly made by people who never watch the game it is being made about (see Invincable or Rudy) but not Miracle.
