Speaking of free space sims has anyone played vega strike? I was thinking of downloading it and was wondering if it was any good.

It's okay
Never played any of the Freespace games, are they any good? I heard you need a joystick?

They are pretty much the ultimate evolution of the mission-based space-based combat flight sim.
You don't actually NEED a joystick, but it is strongly suggested. Mouse/keyboard works pretty well, and I know one or two people who use gamepads. The joystick just makes for a much more atmospheric experience.

I actually fine the mouse and keyboard easer, I find it hard to aim with the joystick

I didn't play Vega Strike much, but I did play the remake of Wing Commander: Privateer (which I believe used a modded Vega Strike engine). I WOULD recommend Privateer Gemini Gold, especially if you played any of the other Wing Commander games.

I use a game pad, a cheap Logitech Dual Action, pretty happy with that.
I cant imagine using mouse and keyboard.

I havnt played any wing commander game in the past but this looks like it might be pretty good and it wont take as long to download. Thanks

Might be easier, but it's not half as much fun, as immersive and it doesn't have the feedback.
I tend to use both : I pilot and dogfight using the joystick, but I always leave my mouse within arm's reach for those moments when aiming precision is crucial, like when firing your primaries at a distant target, or intercepting incoming warheads.
And yes, Freespace 1&2 are awesome. Really. They are both in my top 5 best games of all times. Given their low price on Gog, you can probably buy them both, plus a cheap joystick, for the price of a recent game... and you'll certainly not regret it. Given the amount of free, quality campaigns available on the net, you're signing in for long-term fun.
I completed Freespace 2 with mouse and keyboard without any problems. If you have any sort of gamepad or joystick or whatever you would probably want to try using that first, of course, but it's by no means a requirement to enjoy this excellent game.

You....you aren't lying to me, Arkose?? Are you???? :P
Speaking of Freespace 2, quick question... is it a sandbox space shooter a la Freelancer or strictly mission based??
