Since I've moved to college, I've occasionally had trouble sleeping. Some nights I have just stared at the ceiling until 1:30 AM, when I promptly fall asleep. It hasn't happened often, but this current bout is especially troubling.
It's 4:00 in the morning, and I'm still awake. Wide awake, in fact. I tried turning my fan on, turning it off, adding covers, removing covers, reading a book, playing some Madden, listening to podcasts, and nothing has made me the least bit tired tonight. I'm really worried this will make me crash hard in classes tomorrow (fortunately my exam was today, not tomorrow).
Got any suggestions on how to get a good night's sleep when you're restless?

I've got a few techniques:
Very hot showers usually make me rather tired 10 minutes or so after I'm done
Exercising SOMETIMES helps, its pretty much a coin toss, one day it makes me tired and the next it wakes me up more
A wank can't hurt (unless you do it wrong or have massochistic tendencies [eg: you might buy ubisoft PC games]), even if it doesn't help its more fun that staring at the wall
Most of the time I just put a video on and lie with the light off watching it, often times I just find myself waking up the next day

Thanks for the suggestions, but the only one I haven't tried is the exercise thing, because our campus gym doesn't open until 6 AM. Once I'm done there, I guess I'll grab an energy drink and hope for the best.
In general, restlessness is a sign of not enough movement and maybe too many thoughts/worries.
- You can try some progressive muscle relaxation or chill out/relaxation thing. Lay down, feel your breath, concentrate on parts of your body, try to feel that this part gets warm and heavy, feel how you touch the underground, ...
- Read a non-fiction book like math 101. I usually fall asleep after half a page. :)
- Listen to an audio book
- Get up early (also if you fell asleep late)
- Make a lot of sport during the day
- Don't worry
- Avoid coffee after dinner, beer is okay :)
And finally, if nothing helps and this goes on for a while... consider visiting a doctor.

If you've just moved, it may simply be you're uncomfortable in your new surroundings. It might just take time.
What usually helps me is, an hour or so before bed, I turn off the computer, have it be as quiet as possible, and concentrate on breathing deep. Read a book that's not too involving, or maybe listen to some relaxing music.
Hopefully, in very short time you'll get used to you're surroundings enough where these few times you're unable to sleep at night stops.
My 9th grade English teacher gave me a piece of advice I've remembered ever since, and use occasionally. If you can't sleep, particularly the night before an exam or something, drink a single strong beer (5+%) before bedtime. It's not enough to give you a hangover or prevent you from getting up in the morning, but it's enough to help you sleep.
And yes, I said 9th grade. We have a more relaxed attitude towards alcohol in Denmark ;-)

Your teacher went the long way around, hasn't she? The main reason why beer makes you sleepy is because it has hops in it, it's a natural sedative. Just buy a few small bags of hops (I think they sell it in tablets, too) and eat them when you can't go to sleep. Of course, the beer thing is nice, too.
PS: here in slovenia, we grow tons of the stuff, so we know our hops.
I always drink hot milk.

If you have trouble sleeping, I don't recommend being on the computer or playing games right before you go to bed (or after you've gotten back up in the middle of the night). When I do that, I usually find it more difficult to fall asleep afterwards, rather than easier, even if I'm sleepy. If you want to do something, watching a DVD or reading a book are probably less likely to keep you wired.
Also, even if you can't sleep at all, or if you're not really tired at your normal bedtime, just lying down for a while and relaxing with the lights off will still have you feeling more rested the next day than if you were wandering around your apartment all night.

I too have sleeping problems, though I don't need to sleep that much.
However as Wishbone said, one beer should be enough to help.

ANY milk is bad for you, you do realise that? We are the only animals that keep drinking milk - and OTHER species's milk to boot - after we are weaned.
I've had this problem for years. As a kid, I'd listen to music on my CD player all night. Nowadays I usually listen to podcasts on my iPod. Not only does listening to podcasts make me drowsy, it also kills time until you fall asleep and you'll learn something too.
The older iPod Nanos are pretty small and thin, so if you end up sleeping on top of them (as I occasionally do), they don't cause much discomfort.
Also, avoid coffee. I can't even drink a mouthful of Ice Break after 6pm or I'll be up for hours. Coca-Cola doesn't seem to have too much of an impact though.

Maybe the Amnesia thing is keeping me up at night, though I'm not scared after I play it. I usually don't even think about it until I boot the game up again.
Milk is good to drink, because it builds strong bones and gives you calcium.
I used to sleep every night to the HotSpot (and later the Giant Bombcast) though these days that keeps me up instead of helping me sleep.
