I never watched this series or movies at all and wow I am blown away at how realistic it is.

especially from the time of 1960s when talking about such deep topics and issues like racism, religion gone wrong, civil despuits, politics (more realistic politics unlike star wars prequals :P) and there is SEX and of course good old fashion action/adventure.

Wow this series has so much balls and backbone color me interested, is there a streaming website so I can watch this series :)
You should read William Shatner's "I'm Working On That." Discusses a lot of the show's "technology" and how it impacted a lot of what's come after.
Welcome to the crew!

Feel free to ignore 'Enterprise', 'Voyager', 'Star Trek 5', and the majority of series one and two of 'The Next Generation'.
Glad to see you're getting into Trek. Damn fine universe. Had a lot of blunders, as well, but whenever Trek was good, it was REALLY good, resulting in some of the finest moments ever brought to television.

granny: Enterprise
Enterprise was cool! (especially later seasons) And Voyager's had a cool premise. But yeah, there's a lot more to Star Trek than meets the eye.

And don't get discouraged by the corniness of Season 1 of DS9. That ended up being my favorite series.

Mine, too. And even Season 1 has something to offer: "Duet", one of Trek's best episodes.

Should be right up Elmofongo's angle, as it concerns a pretty "deep topic" . :)

If he can make it through Season 1 of TNG and some of the TOS episodes, I think season1 of DS9 will be no problem :)

"Duet" is a great episode - "Progress" is also good from Season 1. I actually think Season 1 of DS9 was better than season 1 of TNG - though I'll admit it's been longer since I watched season 1 of TNG.

Agreed. With DS9's first seasons, it seemed like the cast and crew knew a lot more about what they wanted to do with the show. I can't actually remember a single episode in Season 1 which I would consider bad. Most of the episodes are kinda slow, but still interesting enough, IMO.

It had a cool premise, and could have been truly incredible. But I gave up after, I think, two series, because I just could not take it any more. One thing I will say to its credit, though, is that (mostly thanks to the music, I think) they did manage to make the Borg almost scary again.

Oh, it had a great premise, but it was executed very poorly. It picked up a little when Tits of Borg... I mean, Seven of Nine joined the crew. But even Jeri Ryan's impressive norks couldn't keep me interested for long...
oddly enough "the daily mash" had a star sign about this today for pisces:

"As you prepare to go to the Star Trek convention this week, remember that the present tense of William Shatner is William Shitner."

Yes, that's pretty much where 'mediocre' ended and 'awesome' began if I recall correctly. First two series were kind of meh, but then the show got to a very interesting overarching storyline and got much less episodic.
