granny: Welcome to the crew! Feel free to ignore 'Enterprise', 'Voyager', 'Star Trek 5', and the majority of series one and two of 'The Next Generation'.
For the most part I feel this is right. I would say Enterprise got better towards the end, but at first it was just bad. DS9 was a bit rough at first, but it has the most consistent good quality through the series out of them all, imo.
Enterprise Season Three was pretty good... scattered episodes in 1, 2 and 4 were good to decent. It's main problem was being the same shit all over again and having very few notable characters (same problem Voyager had).

Fenixp: Enterprise was cool! (especially later seasons) And Voyager's had a cool premise. But yeah, there's a lot more to Star Trek than meets the eye.
I really couldn't get into Enterprise, considering I like a fair chunk of Scott Bakula's work. As for Voyager, I preferred it better when they called it Lost In Space. :P
I really enjoyed watching Star Trek: The Original Series and FMP based it. Somehow those newer ST movies did not appeal me. In general old SF movies say: Forbidden Planet, The enemy mine, Planet of the Apes etc. have certain charm I just love.

Congrats on getting in to Star Trek - a lot of people laugh at TOS now, but for its time it was one of the most (the most?) progressive shows on TV...well, Orion Slave Women, the cute Nurse Chapel (can you believe she was the same actress who played Lwaxana Troi!?) and hot Federation skirts notwithstanding. :)

I'll echo some similar statements and say that DS9 Season 1 and 2 were actually pretty good, even though it did have its weird moments. A lot of people consider episodes like Progress (Self-Sealing Stem Bolts!) and Move Along Home as being some of the weakest episodes of the series, but IMO they were some of the best of DS9's early years.

As for Enterprise, well, I liked it, if only as a guilty pleasure. If you approach it with the right mindset, "A Night in Sickbay" can be incredibly entertaining, if you're not too serious about it, and can laugh about seeing Archer in a green dress wielding a chainsaw. I wouldn't be quick to recommend Enterprise as a whole as essential viewing, but I would argue to approach it with an open mind. Give it a chance; it might grow on you...what I would say though is to watch the pilot (Broken Bow), and the Season 3 two-parter, "In a Mirror Darkly". The latter episode is hilarious, and I dare you not to break out in dark, twisted laughter when even the opening credits turn "eeeevil".

Yeah, and TNG Season 1 and 2 were practically unwatchable. I still can't get over the episode where they have to battle God because Wesley screwed up. Oh yeah, and as for Voyager...well, the less said about that show, the better.

crazy_dave: I actually think Season 1 of DS9 was better than season 1 of TNG - though I'll admit it's been longer since I watched season 1 of TNG.
To be fair, it's not difficult to be better than season 1 of TNG. There are only a couple of decent episodes, several universally reviled ones, and LOTS AND LOTS OF WESLEY.

The thing is, I wouldn't have minded if Wesley had eventually evolved into the show's answer to Chekhov. Instead his character ended up getting horribly wasted.

From what I have seen in youtube the original does seem a little wacky what the half black half white humanoids made just to show how stupid racism is, but I agree it really was progressive.

I mean I realize that Star Trek is more appealing to adults especially with such topics that are not for children like racism and politics.

No one should EVER ignore Enterprise, Voyager, Star Trek 5 or any episode of The Next Generation. Some of us actually enjoyed them. Each series has it's own qualities. I especially liked http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAjVh_pc9wU From Enterprise ;)

P.S Man skirts for the win (The Next Generation)

Oh yeah, Scott Bakula wearing a mechanic uniform. He was great in Quantum Leap, but as a Star Trek captain ? Nooo way.

Oh so you see him in Quantum Leap and cannot accept him in Trek? I feel so very sorry for you. But if that is your choice, so be it. I will not try to change your mind. I do enjoy every episode of Enterprise so I will watch it without issue.

Honestly I never really minded Wesley as a character in small doses. What I minded was the WRITERS of Wesley. He was so obviously the favorite "pet" character who got preferential treatment at every turn, or was the only person who could solve the crisis of the week (even if he'd caused it). I mean, I guess it sorta makes sense as he was essentially Young Gene Roddenberry: The Character™ but it was still irritating as hell.

In normal episodes, he was perfectly fine. He just manned his console and made occasional insightful comments. In a "Wesley episode," on the other hand... eurgh.
