rampancy: Congrats on getting in to Star Trek - a lot of people laugh at TOS now, but for its time it was one of the most (
the most?) progressive shows on TV...well, Orion Slave Women, the cute Nurse Chapel (can you believe she was the same actress who played Lwaxana Troi!?) and hot Federation skirts notwithstanding. :) I'll echo some similar statements and say that DS9 Season 1 and 2 were actually pretty good, even though it did have its weird moments. A lot of people consider episodes like Progress (Self-Sealing Stem Bolts!) and Move Along Home as being some of the weakest episodes of the series, but IMO they were some of the best of DS9's early years. As for Enterprise, well, I liked it, if only as a guilty pleasure. If you approach it with the right mindset, "A Night in Sickbay" can be incredibly entertaining, if you're not too serious about it, and can laugh about seeing Archer in a green dress wielding a chainsaw. I wouldn't be quick to recommend Enterprise as a whole as essential viewing, but I would argue to approach it with an open mind. Give it a chance; it might grow on you...what I would say though is to watch the pilot (Broken Bow), and the Season 3 two-parter, "In a Mirror Darkly". The latter episode is hilarious, and I dare you not to break out in dark, twisted laughter when even the opening credits turn "eeeevil". Yeah, and TNG Season 1 and 2 were practically unwatchable. I still can't get over the episode where they have to battle God because Wesley screwed up. Oh yeah, and as for Voyager...well, the less said about that show, the better.
From what I have seen in youtube the original does seem a little wacky what the half black half white humanoids made just to show how stupid racism is, but I agree it really was progressive.
I mean I realize that Star Trek is more appealing to adults especially with such topics that are not for children like racism and politics.
