Coelocanth: (GOG's cut, assuming 70%)
avatar
awalterj: I thought GOG's cut was only 30% and not 70% ?
No one "outside" knows what GOG's cut is exactly, and they may have different cuts for different games. For old games, they may have been in a good position to get a better cut than usual for a distributor, since they were monetizing the publishers' dead back catalog, put a lot of effort into fixing and presenting the games, and the publishers didn't really believe that anyone wanted to buy these old games anyway. Still, 70% for a distributor sounds excessive. For new games, if they asked for 70%, they simply wouldn't get any games to sell.

Our cut is public, though :D

Does anyone have a photo of the parking lot outside the GOG office? If we knew what kinda cars they drive, we could reverse engineer how much of a cut GOG takes :)

Hey, I never noticed that. Thanks for the info, that's good to know for times when that old "GOG wants more than the industry standard cut" get resurrected again.

Coelocanth: I doubt they lose money on all the games in the sale. I imagine there may be a select few that are sold at a 'loss', but with digital distribution, I have to think the concept of loss leaders is somewhat fluid.
TET has mentioned in another thread that CC costs per transaction are about a buck to buck-fifty, so the very cheap games may very well end up costing them money. That means Shelter, Pid and Gateways, and possibly a few more. No idea about PayPal or Paysafe fees, and there has been a rumour that GOG is doing a single charge instead of multiple ones in some cases, but no idea if true or not.

Thanks for the link Judas, but we still need a photo of GOG's parking lot!
If it's a bunch of used Lada's, people will buy more games so you can buy even better cars.

P1na: It's not that hard to ignore things you don't like. The novelty of the fall sale isn't here, but it's still kinda fun regardless. I honestly find very nice that they constantly try new things on these sales, and I really enjoyed a several of them. And we always have the weekly and Christmas sales.
avatar
HypersomniacLive: And the Summer and Easter Sales. Plus the Gem Promos. Not to mention unexpected ones, like the Luck of the Irish one.

GOG runs all sorts of different sales all year around, participate in those that appeal to you, ignore those that don't. ;-)
I love the summer sales a lot! It's where I budget to buy games on that schedule. While the Christmas sales have a more holiday goodness all round, I prefer using it to spend on other stuff, like at my favorite book stores, which only predictably hold year end sales for the holidays.

This insomnia sale was heaps of fun though! And it helps that I managed to snag stuff that I wanted. Are you guys excited for the summer sales? If it's held at the same date last year, that will be next month.

We're always excited about a GOG Sale around here! ;-)
it's an awful idea for a sale and if a few kind gog users hadn't given me the link to the games in rotation I'd have kept wasting my time checking the site every hour or so

Oops. Yeah, I reversed the figures. D'oh!

Why waste your time? If you don't like the sale format, don't bother with it. That's what I do when GOG does sale formats that I don't particularly care for.
