Girlfriend was without power until she went to bed... kind crazy. She also said the Jersey shore got massively hit.

First time I can say I am happy to be in Georgia for the amenities.

Fake_Sketch: There are no Hurricanes in my country, but in my hometown(Punta Arenas) we had 100+Km/h several times a month(Local trees grew up curved by the wind).
I googled Punta Arenas and wow... what a beautiful area. You're lucky.
Just saw on CNN - 15 deaths, 6,5 million without electricity and 10 billion $ worth of damage.

Theta_Sigma: I'd still rather have Pecan Sandys myself.

edit: when it rains it fucking pours. My power got knocked out, and I just discovered when I turned it back on that my TV is fried. I checked it online to see what the issue could be, turns out my capacitors are shot, and it will cost me $500 to get it repaired because I think it's past warranty. Part of me just wants to break down and head desk repeatedly. :( Another part of me wants to scream.
I found out my old monitor wasn't working because of bad capacitors and it turned out they sell those things pretty cheaply, plus there's often 'How to' video's on youtube.

I never soldered anything in my life but I managed in the end, it was basically a really cheap repair. Might be worth checking it out, replacing capacitors is relatively easy.
It apparently passed by us, so all we got was a little drizzle and a day off school. I hope everyone who's actually in the path of the storm is okay.

Thanks for the tip, I'll see to make sure it is past warranty for sure, if it isn't I'll definitely look into this. :)

shadesofdeath320: My parents will definitely lose power since even a slight breeze causes an outage back home in southern NY, but I should be okay here in Albany.

Got the laptop charged just in case with some choice GOG's installed, along with a bottle of Bailey's and Captain Morgan to pass the time.

Alcohol and bad weather are so great together.

orcishgamer: Alcohol goes with almost anything. But as a kid, I lived in a rural area with a weak grid, summer thunder storms were sure to take out power several nights during the summer, I have fond memories of reading as a family and some board games by the light of a kerosene lamp.

I've heard of a preparedness strategy that calls of "faking it" once a month. Cut power, make sure your batteries are fresh (you're using them) and everything is where you expect it, make dinner, and unplug from the world. This sounds like it would have the second benefit of just being a reprieve from always going... well too fast is the way I feel in the world (most days I wouldn't trade it, but brief respites are welcome).
Great idea. Also, I agree with taking a break some times. Seems like people are rushing right into the grave. Usually, my taking it slow and easy involves a hike in the mountains, a few hours chopping wood, then an evening with family and/or friends in front of a wood stove or fire while eating, drinking (not just alcohol), and not thinking about the stuff we need to get done.

Anyway, hope people are staying safe, not much is going on up here, luckily we missed out on the brunt of the storm.
Well my girl has been without power for over 24 hours so it's worse than any hurricane I ever experience in FL already, from that point of view.

It sucks because we couldn't Skype today due to her not having power. Arg!
My area in southeastern PA didn't get hit that badly at all. In fact, the power only went out for a second at the most last night. We have gotten tons wind and quite a bit of rain but nothing really that serious. In fact, I watched a couple of movies from my family's DVR to pass the time.

Today, the storm seems to be over in the case of my county. There's no more rain and barely any wind right now. Tons of leaves everywhere but I haven't seen any fallen trees yet.
The wind's starting to pick up again around here, but I don't think it's supposed to do much more than be a bit windy for a while.
Well, last night was a bit of a "letdown." Just some high winds and a few branches down. Power actually stayed on! I was surprised.

Multiple data centers down in New York, houses burned down in Queens, multiple subway tubes flooded, and who knows what else. I'd say New York got hit pretty hard, nasty storm, the perfect confluence of events did make it a lot worse as many "experts" (many of which may only be self proclaimed, dunno) were saying.
It was a bad one...I'm on my generator, and just getting ready to shut it off for some quiet, so I can sleep. Parts of the city took a real beating with one neighborhood in Queens I think it was, losing 80 to 100 homes to fire, because the streets were flooded with a good 3 feet of water from tidal surge. Traffic tunnels flooded, and up where I am, trees and power lines down everywhere. A tree came down on a house in a nearby town, where I grew up from middle schoool through high school, and killed the two children inside...very sad. Spent all today picking up on the property, and the road, checked on the old lady next door, then made it over to my girlfriend's place to bring here a small propane camping stove, and my small generator to get her refridgerator running again for her and her two boys. Latest I heard was 5 more days minimum to possibly more than a week before any chance of power restoration. I feel lucky, my house is intact, and I am fine, and all my family and friends are okay. Many people nearby, were not so lucky, with houses being crushed, and to a lesser extent, losing thier vehicles. Anyway, off to bed, wishing all others in the NorthEast well, and hope you all came through OK.
low rated
Never mind the thousands getting killed in landslides in China each year or by floods in Bangladesh, 18 Americans are what matters!
