StingingVelvet: In my experience with hurricanes (dozens of them) this is really exaggerated.
It probably is to most people who see them up close on a regular basis, but I'm in Northern NJ...we aren't supposed to see these damn things...hence the exaggerations. Add in the fact that every weatherman here keeps shifting back contact with the storm, and you've got more people panicking because of the wait too.

Yeah, it makes sense people not used to them are more frightened. In Florida they seriously stopped phasing me a long time ago. I mean that could be bad, as once in a great while a bad motherfucker like Andrew hits you directly and your house is gone, but by and large they're a lot of wind and you stay inside and then they're gone.

My girlfriend is in Philly and said she was warned of "possible week-long power outages"... crazy!

I can vouch that there is excitement about them up here. We are as excited about hurricanes as Southerners are about snow. 1' of snow no problem up here, get out the snowblowers and shovels, down south *everybody panic*

I got that too...and laughed. But yeah, most places here are in full on panic mode because this stuff rarely hits. Hell my governor actually came back to NJ...I think.

Oh yeah, I had to hold back laughter when an ex-girlfriend asked me what snow was, and was panicking when she saw it start to come down.
