CharlesGrey: If Nintendo still had Rare software on their side ( the old Rare, not whatever is left of them now ) I think they'd be fine on the third-party side. Pretty much all of the top games during the N64 era were either directly by Nintendo or Rare titles. GoldenEye, Blast Corps, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Perfect Dark, Banjo & Kazooie + Sequel, Killer Instinct... All excellent games, most of which are still considered true classics nowadays.

Heck, Nintendo could probably get by just on their first party exclusives, if only they actually did something with all of those franchises that keep gathering dust. Whatever happened to Pilot Wings? Loved that on the N64. There's no new Metroid in sight either, as far as I know, and so far no true Zelda sequel. I really don't know what Nintendo are doing... Maybe they aren't sure, either. They have such a rich, varied pool of game franchises they could revive, but for some reason don't take advantage of it.

And they really ought to do something about that Eternal Darkness sequel. That would have been such a strong exclusive title for the WiiU. Seems that opportunity has passed, though. I hope it will be completed at all. :(
nintendo loves playing it ave these dasy especially with the wii U doing so badly
pilot wings was relegated to the 3DS

and instead of you know doing something with their other ip's like ice climbers exitebike dr mario ( its a good puzzle game )
f zero
mother \earthbound ( not a fan but alot of peopel want to see more of this series )
another wave race
another code R
and countless others they seem to be content with endless mario party titles mario karts smash bros
and zelda rehashes

super mario allstars 25th anniverary edition was a fucking joke

and considering what other M pulled metroid is damaged goods right now

off course they say games are coming
there wil be a new wii U starfox but when exactly ?

nintendo either sees fit to relegate their new titles to the 3DS while giving the wi U the rehash parade keeping the games in japan or just letting their titles rot
A SEGA thread that's finally about Nintendo again is quite sad.
I never was into Megadrive or Genesis and never had a SEGA console since I grew up with SNES, but I always thought Sega Saturn and Dreamcast to be the peak of console gaming. I honestly regret having bought an N64 and not something from Sega instead.
R.I.P.

The idea of multi processing in a game console was excellent, it was just made for real way before it's time as it seems from today's perspective.

yes but this was 1994
it was just way too early for multiple processors in consoles

developers flocked to the ps1 because it was easy to program for ( and it had 1 cpu )
even sega's own teams couldnt handle the saturn too well ( am2 couldnt wring more then 60% out of the saturn with virtua fighter 2 ....consdering how good vf 2 is just imagine )

ahem anyway

xa_chan: "Sorry, Humble SEGA Bundle is currently unavailable in your area."

Haha, if Humble Store starts to do that kind of shit, they won't have me as a client any time soon...
Humble Store has been restricting content from sale in Japan (even when available here from other stores) for some time. I haven't bothered using them since they did that.
avatar
Trid: So, even if you would get this bundle as a gift you would not be able to redeem it on steam? Just curious.
avatar
the.kuribo: Hard to say exactly, although if I were to guess I think only the purchase page is region-restricted, and the redemption pages are not. Don't hold me to that though.
SEGA IP block keys from activation in Japan. So chances are, some of the games won't activate. DLC should activate though as those are rarely IP blocked.

That said, I've never tried adding a restricted game with that system Humble use.

I bought a handful of Humble bundles but never got a problem, guess I was lucky, then. But I'll add an extra layer of carefulness before buying anything, from now on...

I've been looking into this issue a little further, and have found out the following:

1. Steam actually has a provision in their TOS that they can terminate access to your account if you use a VPN or proxy while using any of their services. Anecdotally, Steam has and does actively restrict purchasing privileges from accounts for making purchases from the storefront using a proxy IP address. However, if one were to actually physically travel to a particular country and place an order from there with an IP address from that location, the purchase would be in accordance with their rules and regulations and the game stays in your account and remains accessible even after you travel back to a restricted region (as of right now). Additionally, one can receive and activate gifts of games that are outside of regional access from the store.

2. Humble Bundle does not have any specific mention of the use of using an alternate IP address to purchase bundles or games in their TOS, but they do have a general clause which says you are not to use technology which circumvents their ability to restrict access to you. In this instance, if one were to have a friend in a non-restricted country purchase and gift the bundle or game, it is still within the rules of the site to accept and redeem the gifted codes to your Steam account. Also, there are many anecdotal cases where people have successfully redeemed gifted Steam codes of region-restricted games from within the affected region.

3. Currently it is possible to jump through these hoops and still be in line with Steam's terms of service while having access to region restricted games. However, it is worth mentioning that Steam can of course change their terms of service at any time to revoke access to these games or outright terminate access to your account if they so choose, even if you have been in full compliance with their prior terms of service.

4. This just further illustrates why DRM-Free, Region-Free GOG is so awesome, and why region restrictions and Steam can be a royal pain in the ass sometimes. Long live GOG, and let's hope they continue to grow.

Perhaps it's the brain damage caused by the resolution and frame rate of Saturn games? XD

What the TOS states, and how Valve act/Steam works aren't always the same. For example, a was advised by a Steam employee a while back to change my IP address in order to circumnavigate IP gated content. As long as you don't purchase with a VPN from a different region; Valve really don't care if you use a VPN to access purchased content.

However, they do now prevent some gifts sent directly over Steam from being activated in certain regions. You can have an idea of which games may be affected by this by looking at the Steam database (steamdb.info). If you see the following flags, you want to make damn sure the game can be used before getting a copy:

AllowCrossRegionTradingAndGifting No
onlyallowrunincountries

Both of those flags are getting more and more usage. In fact, it seems that Valve have taken control of regional restrictions away from Steamworks partners. And set onlyallowrunincountries to No be default. Developers/publishers can no longer alter that themselves. They have to convince Valve to remove it. Further, it's not entirely clear on how onlyallowrunincountries actually works. While a message that basically states "this is a restricted gift" will appear in your inventory (if you place such a game there) regardless of the country the game was purchased in, only those bought in specific regions actually appear to be restricted. And only Valve will know the specifics for any given game, unless the publisher/developer manages to get some control back.

The only guaranteed "safe" games to activate these days are ROW retail keys sold outside of Steam. But even then, you'll likely need a VPN to actually activate.

It's rather sad really. While two of the three major consoles have moved to opening up regional restrictions, Valve are intent on enforcing even harsher limits.

Interesting and very informative, thank you for taking the time to elaborate. I guess there are more pitfalls involved with Steam purchases than I had originally realized.

For some people flaws are design features, look at all the new ultra low res games.
There is a reason why there are interlace-modules available for a very high price that transform the crystal clear picture of a modern flat screen into something more blurry like back in the days.
