orcishgamer: Interestingly if you think dogs are too smart to eat, pigs are actually smarter.
Exactly my justification for eating dogs in addition to pigs. Dog soup, even. As long as it's someone else's dog and not mine.

spindown: How do you determine if pigs are smarter than dogs, and what does that even mean?

Hillarious, I would like to hear the details of these competitions!
How about Humand Rights for Humans as a start?

I love how animal right activists get all worked up about dogs not being brought up as vegans, but ignore the mistreatment of their fellow humans right around the corner.

Before I give a single dime to peta, I will take all the homeless in my neighbourhood drinking.
Disgusting...nearly retarded.
I agree preserve ecosystem and save all animal equally from extinct.
But to treat specific species which some people feel cute and safety as sacred one,it's ridiculous.
They go fanatic and terrorise with eating cow, pig, any other non cute animals.

You win the internet, sir
Hello,

I very much like the idea of giving human rights to other sentient or non-sentient species, especially whales and dolphins, killer sharks, orcas, pigs, cows, dogs, cats, birds, trees and vegetables. They have all the same right to live as we humans do. But what should we eat then?

But first we should try to enforce the human rights charta on all humans. We could begin in China and give those chinese travel workers okayish working conditions. Or we could stop 100k children starving to death every day, So many problems in human society on earth that we could spent valuable resources on our own species, before caring too much about animals. With proper treatment of all human beings, we would improve the standart of living of all the other life forms on earth too. E.g. When the african farmer has enough to eat for himselfn he has not to hunt some elefants for money to feed his family. With a proper living standart he would have the luxury to look around and recognize the beauty of nature. That there is something worth protecting. But when he has to worry how to survive the next day...

Don't get me wrong, i like animals and i would love to see a stop to enviromental pollution and proper treatment of all life on earth. But we should work on more important problems just now, then giving human rights to our pets or cute wild life animals. What is with the not so cute animals like sharks or lions or krakens. Aren't they just as valuable as dolphins or whales (or humans)?

Have a nice day.

This pig came up to me and said he hadn't had a bite in weeks. So I bit him. Wakka wakka!
We spoke with my brother yesterday almost about this. Every animal has rights but nowadays there is mostly only punishment for being a man. A great and a good man. A horrible crime indeed.
I like dolphins!

Hey, how's it going, Antimateria? I haven't seen you here in a while.

The article covers animals that are self aware—dolphins, specifically—and not necessarily cute. And even though the thread title was meant to get a laugh (or groan, I'll takes whats I can gets) the idea itself isn't half bad. There are already protections for endangered species. It is worth discussing a protected species registry for intellectually evolved animals as well. Also, the mercury content in dolphins makes them unsuitable for human consumption anyhow.

Yeah well.. Haven't been so drunk lately. =) Just have been playing and taking it easy. Well, in fact today a bit hangover but it was about time.
The distinction between humans and other mammals surely has grown thinner over the last years. Research shows that.

What is the difference between a human, an elefant, a monkey, a dolphin, a whale, .... other mammals in terms of their brain, which is most often thought to be the decisive part?

Are these mammals aware of themselves? Do they have feelings? Do you plan ahead? Do they understand? Do they have language?

I think that most of these questions have been answered positive. So I can understand that killing such animals is in a way comparable to killing another human.

We even don't hesitate killing humans, so we are even less reluctant to kill another species, even if it is almost as intelligent as ourselves (certainly as intelligent as some of ourselves). It will take a long time before we can work up that much respect. Christians might do faster when they consider that it is all gods creation and needs to be preserved. However I am not sure if they will turn it that way.
