I'm trying to update the witcher (original) and I'm not able to do so. It mentions the gog downloader has an upgrade feature and I can't find it.

I looked and there seems to be a new gog downloader so that may be the problems. That is the first issue.

The second part is if why wasn't I notified of a new gog downloader with the old version of the downloader? Do I have to reinstal the gog downloader to get the new downloader?

I games ready to be installed on the original downloader. Do I need to upload those games on the new downloader to be viable?

I have the orignal witcher installed do I have to reupload onto the new downloader to get the updates?

P.S. The original downloader is called the Gog Download Beta I believe. That should clear up any misunderstanding between "old' and "new" downloader.

Games are completely independent of the downloader (you don't actually need the downloader at all, though for some large games, like your example, The Witcher, it's handy).

And, yes, the old downloader (0.9 or whatever it was) is completely different from the new one, you'll have to remove the old and install the new (the old one doesn't work at all nowadays as there were changes in how the downloader communicates with the server). It isn't so much an update as an entirely new program.

As for the games you downloaded with the old downloader, they most likely have gotten updates since then (that was quite a while ago, after all), so, yes, you probably should download them again.

When you say reinstall. Do you mean uninstall the game on your computer, upload the game on the new downloader, then reinstall the game. Or just upload the game on the new downloader.

Basically will the new downloader recognize the game that was installed by the old downloader for update purposes?

The downloader doesn't actually care about installed games at all (it never did, it has no knowledge whatsoever what games you have installed), all it does is check whether anything new have become available since you last viewed your shelf (like an updated installer, or new extras), and in that case shows you a link to the shelf so that you can go fetch it.

And I was talking about installing the downloader, not the game.

The old downloader didn't have its own installer, so you need to find where you saved it (I'd guess the desktop, or some download folder) and throw it in the recycle bin. Then go fetch the new one, install it (the new one does have an installer), and you're good to go.

Well I have the games installed by the old downloader. Then I don't need to uninstall the game, but just upload the game on the new downloader. Will the game update? Doesn't a version of the game have to be shown?

That's the thing, it doesn't know anything about the game. It cannot tell you whether your game is up to date, only that new stuff has appeared since you last checked.

The downloader doesn't install games itself (unlike Steam), it downloads game installers which are then run (automatically, by default) to install the games.

Thing is though, there have been changes in the installer, and if you're not careful, you might end up with two copies of the game installed (the new installer by default installs to a different place than the old one), and two copies of the game downloaded (the downloader doesn't remove old downloaded files).

Um... I'm not sure how to answer that question, because I'm not entirely sure what you mean exactly.

The downloader will not recognise or remove files that have been downloaded earlier, it's up to you to manage them.

To download anything, you will either have to get the new downloader, or download directly through the browser (by flipping the "GOG.com Downloader mode" switch to "off").

But then maybe I need to ask it from a different way. I get that the updates are do to the website's new version of the game.

If that is the case, what to I need to do to get the patches to the game with the new manager.

When I clicked on the link you gave, at the top right part, it has a picture showing the new manager. Where it says 3 games updates. Beneath the photo it gives a bullet point list of the improvements of the new manager. One bullet point says,

"Patch & PM notifications

The downloader will notify you about new patches, forum replies, and PMs—right on your taskbar!"

It notifies me, I get that. What do I need to do to make sure that the patches and updates go into my game (provided with the new manager)?

The "3 games updated" notification, means (as I said earlier, though possibly I was unclear) that since you last checked your shelf, 3 games have had files changed or added (this may be something new in the extras section, not necessarily a game update).

To get those updates, click the notification link, which will bring you to your shelf, then download the files marked with "new" (or "updated", I forget which it is). Then, when the download is done, the installer will start (unless you changed that autorun setting of the downloader, which I have as I find it annoying), and you follow the guide to install the update.

Also I when I was on the website and it showed me that the two games updated. I went to the game on the shelf and clicked it. I couldn't find what was exactly updated. Did I miss something on the page?

The "new" or "updated" icon didn't show unless I missed something...

You mentioned that it could be an extra, even there I didn't seen "new" or "updated."

It's very likely you did, the "updated" icon for the games is very hard to notice. Though there is a "new and updated" switch on the top of the shelf (only visible when there actually are updates or new files).

Unfortunately, since you already visited the shelf, those flags have been reset, and you won't get to know what was updated.

Your best bet now is to check this page on the GOGwiki and this forum thread, to see if you can figure out what was changed.

The switch to see only the games with updated/new files is at the top of the wood/black shelf, in the centre of the row saying "My collection", but it's only visible when there actually is anything new/updated to see. And yes, unfortunately, the "updated" flag resets as soon as you view the shelf, it's quite annoying (I sometimes forget that it does, and click the link while at work, then when I get home and can download, I no longer have any idea what was updated).

As for The Witcher's own update function, yes, the web site it refers to has been removed. Although, I'm quite sure the game hasn't had any actual update since it was released on GOG (I believe the 1.5 patch had already been released at that time since that was the one that removed the disc check, and that's likely the last patch the game will receive).

The download page says there is a "2.0" installer for The Witcher, but this refers to the new GOG installer (which has better compatibility with Windows 8, and some other improvements over the old installer), not to the game itself.

Oh. So all updates are either the installer or extras. Cool.

As for the Witcher, I just reinstalled the entire game. Does it include the patch? If the Website is taken down. How do I update the game for the last 1.5 patch now that the site is gone?

What about Witcher 2?
