Show him LBA 1&2 - he'll never go back to consoles :)

StingingVelvet: Steam and controller support have really made the gap rather small when playing. If you mean how to get him more into traditional PC game playstyles like mouse aim or RTS, I would say just tell him to have patience. It takes a long time to get used to a whole new control method, but eventually it becomes like second-nature. He just has to have the patience to stick with it.
+1 , exactly this.

With most games developed for both markets, there is little difference, I have my Pc to the big screen and a X360 pad, that's it.. It does not "feel" like a console surely, with all the setup options and occasional desktop fan going wild in heat from the processing of some unoptimized games (Dawn of War II and FarCry 3 do it to mine), the mouse & keyboard use to launch things or manage some parts of a game..

Now about quality.. I have a flat 16/9 and my setup can't go beyond 1360x768 at best, though I keep 720p (1280x720) as default, to read the small letters and ease the poor Pc some. I can see the difference with my bro Ps4 "true" 1080p, didn't notice too much by the ps3 for its time.

Recommend some games.. only on Pc.. The Secret World is quite good for a one time pay MMO, of course World of Warcraft..Well, mmo and some complex mouse use for RTS likes apart, the best ones are logically already on both market. :/

Maighstir: Yet PC (regardless of OS) is the one platform with the highest possibilities to use a brand-new machine to play decades-old games (that haven't been officially re-released for the current "generation").
And I've had the same PC for 5 years too. :P
What kind of games does your friend generally prefer to play?

Games like Bastion, Braid, Hard reset, Skyrim (good if you want to introduce him to modding), Flatout 1 & 2, Orcs must Die 1 & 2, Divinity 2 & Borderlands 2.

Then you might want to introduce him to some of the types of games that you'll generally not find on consoles. Games like:
Dawn of War 2, Shadowrun Returns, R.U.S.E, Gray Matter & Legend of Grimrock.

Not all of these have been bundled, but most are older titles that should show up on 75% off sales.
I would say he should get Skyrim when it goes on sale in the summer. Oblivion and Morrowind would work too if he has played them on console or doesn't mind the drop in graphics. You said that he likes good graphics but I don't know to what extent. The later Fallout entries by Bethesda would also work.

The main aim is to get him interested in all those mods which are only available through PC and work on from there.
Diablo 2 and Warcraft III .
If he has access to a high quality rig, then how about letting him play an AAA game that he already played on console. I can only imagine what it must be like to go from playing Arkham City (last AAA I played so all that I really know at this point :P Actually Witcher 2 is another option I guess) at 30 fps and no anti-aliasing on a couch, to 1920x1080 4x AA at 60+FPS smack in front of a 24''+ screen. He can still use a controller if he wants, but the mouse is far superior in that game (imo of course) since it is completely painless to target whatever enemy you want in a group of 20+.

If you have Fallout (first one) installed then buy a couple six packs of his favorite beer/beverage and tell him : "Play for two hours and the six packs are yours" That way you can get him into pc gaming, and keep the beer because he'll forget all about it ;-)
In fact, you can do the above with 2 other games as well : Civilization and Commandos. Perhaps he isn't into strategy since he hasn't been properly initiated yet ? (having been a console gamer up till now)

Sachys: Edit: oh, i forgot, obviously keyboard and mouse are alien to him, so controller compatible games (doesnt matter the service) are best! :)
I can't believe no one has suggested the Heroes of Might and Magic series yet. Tell him to sign up here and get HoMM3 and he'll blossom into a PC user basically in about 30 minutes. If you are playing other games online with him, you will no longer do so for a long while. He may die of starvation and loose his job.. you mentioned you were semi close to them, so drive over and help him from time to time. Be sure to play a hotseat game as well.

Sachys: Edit2: scuse spelling, i have a giant cat sat on me
Hi kitty.

Edit1: If you're wanting him to stay steam for now for some reason, tell him to maybe look into Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines. He'll need to patch it in order to get it to run which really isn't complicated but the game looks nice enough that it won't be an eyesore, and is a good mouse and keyboard game to help him get used to the controls. It's not a hard game by any stretch but definitely entertaining if he's never played it before.

Here's a video tutorial to get it patched too. http://youtu.be/LtFLT8MPxzM

Sachys: Okay, so after seeing the trailers for OUTLAST today, my long time console gaming friend Ruprecht finally caved and bought it. Whilst it was cheaper on GOG, he went with a Steam purchase (having an account already from a prior purchase of Dark Souls). Fair enough, he's not the most techy type, and whislt I live near enough to aid him, he also doesnt want to be gogged down is stuff he doesnt undertands and HAVE to ring me if he can help it.

Already though - having redownloaded DS (a game hes familiar with from xbox), his eyes are opening to the possibilities of PC gaming with mods, fixes etc, and it got me thinking - Steam (in his case) is about the right kind of start for him (though there will be a day when there is a beating GOG in his heart!!!!), as it auto updates and does a bunch of stuff for him. It also gives him an easy social side where he can contact me or another friend quite easily if he is having problems (lets face it, for some the transition to PC gaming can be daunting).

So, he has Dark Souls ( a game he is familiar with) and Outlast (a game he is not - HEHEHEH! - he doesnt even own a commode!), but both seem to provide controller support and what I want to know is:

What games would you recommend that are either bundled (or have been repeatedly) or dirt cheap that have or will appeal to modern console gamers once they have gotten beyond the base threshold of actually TRYING a game on PC?

Obviously the humble WB and ORIGIN bundles come to mind... but there must be many others that can ease these poor folks into a new gaming world?

See, hopefully I can pick out a bunfle for him here and there or bag him a cheapo from steam as we go - the plan being to eventually get him interested in DRM free as well through a purchase of Witcher from steam and of course the GOG redeem option... heheheh!

Your ideas please: he's basically been mostly AAA all this time (so some high calibre indies are a good idea). Still quite stuck on high graphics (thought hat will change) and like FPS, RPG (a ala skyrim etc) and doesnt like strategy at all.

Mostly grew up woth console gaming, ended up beating Ultima IV on the skin of my teeth :P

akhliber: Strike Suit Zero
Jade Empire

Sachys: I think these two might be good choices actually! :)
Yeah I was going to say Jade Empire too!
I guess anything else relatively recent and 3D by BioWare then - ME, Dragon Age etc.
GTA and Saints Row series too, if he hasn't played them to death on console already... (LA Noire and Bully too I guess)
Bioshock series? the Batman games? the 3D Fallouts?

Very good but strange. Because console has very very hard games. And also on the RPG side there are very hard games too. On the other side PC has save feature every time you want. PC games are more easy. If a person comes from console he/she should not have a problem playing PC games.

Final Fantasy 1 and Dragon Warrior does not make me type "Give", "1"," and Press Enter exactly 1000 times to max out my compassion virtue :P

I bought a new PC and starting with classic isometric CRPGs for Windows starting with Diablo 1 and ending with Sacred Gold.

Than I play first person games inspired from Ultima Underworld that will conclude with S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
(Deus Ex 1, System Shock, Elder Scrolls 1 2 3, Vampires included)
The Mass Effect Series & Dragon Age =)
