Please don't take this as a dig at people with negative rep. I'm not trying to gossip monger or point fingers. But I have to wonder.
All I ever seem to do is start arguments. If any was going to have negative rep it should be me. I've never hosted a give away (I don't have extra money for games that aren't for me) and the best I do is engage in friendly chit-chat. And yet here I am with nearly 160 rep. What am I doing right? (Or others wrong).

You don't talk about rep and you don't hang around those rep-draining places. (like the Ninja Giveaway thread for example)
Your ability to suck a golf ball through 30 feet of garden hose no doubt helps.

So I take it that if I want to keep my rep up I should never mention it again?

What if you can only manage 25 feet of garden hose?

IMO, your reputation does nothing but go up the more often you mention what a stupid concept a number under a name is to base any judgment whatsoever of a user on.

But maybe that's just me. I tend to base one's reputation on what they do and say rather than an easily manipulated number under their name.

Well, what I have noticed is that everyone who has complained about their dropped rep has resulted in having their rep dropped even more. For the rest, they just happen to stay on the "wrong" threads (gifting, ninja giveaway, open this thread, etc.)
Over 99% of people here have positive rep. You get rep just by posting. A low-rated post may cost you a couple of points, but it takes some real dedication to get into the negative numbers. Unless you are an obnoxious troll, beggar or scammer it's pretty much impossible to have negative rep.

Then you lose your 3rd star every four or five hours. :D

You have 442 rep so I trust your opinion on this

Basically, yeah.

For a longer answer: while there are several factors to rep gain (most of them involving other users), talking about the rep does tend to invite down-reppers, and rarely brings much good with it to compensate for the loss.

I'll have to loudly object to that please.

BULLSHIT.

Thank you. Carry on.
