So Civ 5 is on 75% on Steam for the next 11 hours.

Sounds great?!?!
Well it is Steam and for those who think Steam is a devil this is a no go.

Now while it sounds interesting I started to fill my cart with all CIV V DLCs to get a full game. Because I don't like that there are expansions or DLCs out there that I don't have. Call it greed or vanity or any other weakness, I just like to have a full game.

So at the end of it, my Subtotal says: 38.09 $ (or rather 28,83€) for that.
For a 75% reduced game (Yes all DLC and Expansions are on 75%)

That would mean 152$ for a full game at full price on Steam.

With an original basic game coming out on 2010 buggy as hell and with a comatose loading screen that would have you die of old age if you would ever chose to reload your savegame.
Okay the Expansion came out only this year, but on February, so it's almost one year old.

So I rather play another session of Alpha Centauri with Alien Crossfire (here on GOG), which has excellent loading time by the way and spend the of the remaining 152$ or 38.09$ on - I don't know - a hooker or some painkillers or something.

Sorry, I don't want to offend anyone.

Speaking of offended:

I just feel as offended by 152$ price tag as by a 75% price reduction tag with 38$ subtotal.
So what do you think?
Do you have a limit a game may cost, are video games are luxury and should be expensive, what are you thoughts?

1 - The GotY edition has all the little DLCs. The total price, as far as I see, for EVERYTHING, is $20.

2 - Yes you are crazy, what a "full" game is now-a-days depends on how much OCD you have. Skyrim is one of my favorite games of all time but I would never buy the house DLC for it, I don't need it and don't want it. Most of the Civ DLCs are stupid map packs that are completely irrelevant and available for free as mods.

3 - If you love a game or series there is nothing wrong with spending money on it. I spent a total of $100 on Fallout: New Vegas in the end but it was worth EVERY penny. I don't have an antagonistic relationship with publishers and spending money on good games.

I have the same problem but do not spend $152 on one game... That money can get you so many games right now considering January 5 has not passed us yet + some good German beer.

Doesn't Steam filter what DLCs are included?
As soon as you buy a package the single items dissappear.

They aren't stating anywhere what's included in the GOTY Edition, so I can't really verify that.

It's a model that works unfortunately, expect to see it get much much worse.

The sims is a prime example of this, sims 3 is currently 66% off including the DLCs on steam, but even with that discount it'll cost you around $180. Without the discount it'll come in around $490, mind you this is only for the main stuff, they also have a store where you can buy single items and such.

As I said it's unfortunately profitable, you don't need huge amounts of customers when the ones you have are more than willing to spend thousands upon thousands of dollars on a single game sold piecemeal.

Uh, no. Everything is still listed on the store page, no matter what. I am sure google can tell you exactly what is included, but I am sure it is damn near everything if not everything. Even if you have to buy a few more DLCs to get OMG EVERYTHING it's still way lower, like way WAY lower, than the price you are floating.

And the root issue is still your OCD which publishers abuse and you smile while they do it.

That is fair enough, but a GOTY edition comes out a year/two years/sometimes later after the initial release. If you buy the game when it comes out (whether discounted or not) you will most of the time end up paying full price for the DLC that follows. I don't think that the GOTY argument is fair simply because of the time frame involved and I don't think it has anything to do with OCD either.

And of course it has to do with OCD, or some compulsion anyway. I loved Civ5, bought it at midnight on day one, played it for a 100 hours. When the first $5 civilization pack came out I said "meh, too expensive" and passed it by. There was no OMG NEED compulsion to have it, nor did the original game I loved suddenly feel bad or incomplete. When the DLC went on a massive sale I got them all for a couple bucks and that was that.

It is a compulsion to feel the complete, well regarded original game is no longer good enough because DLC came out. There are exceptions of course, like From Ashes and Mass Effect 3, which was pretty devious, but it's not common.

Sure, it makes sense in this situation but that's not the universal big picture.

For example, I bought Far Cry 3 soon after release because I heard that it was great. If/when they release DLC for it, I will probably buy it. Not because I have OCD but because I want to experience the unique content (that being said, I won't buy bullshit like more signature weapons). I'm not blaming the developers/publishers - I'm just saying that unless I want to wait 2 years for the GOTY (or for another sale), it's going to be pricey. And I wouldn't say that I have OCD either.

Oh of course, you misunderstood me. I just mean when you feel you need everything if you get the game, or buy obviously poorly done DLC like the map packs. Like I said I spent $100 total on New Vegas and regret nothing, amazing game. On the other hand I bought the standard version of Assassin's Creed 3 because I know those games are too large for me as it is.

It all depends, but needing every DLC for every game you play no matter what is a compulsion.

Ah, that clarifies it! As far as low-quality DLC goes (for me that is skins and general aesthetic garbage) I'll buy it if the price is right. And by right, I mean very low.
