Ah, the message? Yes. But the 15/16 red cards (for me) just throws anything like that right out.

It was 16... not 15, unless I counted wrong both times.
And, no, I didn't notice the thing they said at the end, because the only challenge was to count the number of cards, not pay attention to other details. When I'm doing my math homework I don't count the number of times the number 5 appears.
Also, the Mentalist would be better if it didn't just blatantly copy the premise of the show Psych.

It is used only as an explanation of the challenge, not part of the challenge itself.

But what is the challenge? I can understand that they wanted to say that focusing on red cards makes you not bother to read the text (saw a better one with a gorilla suit and basketballs), but what is the point of arbitrarily removing a card?

I counted ten. Obviously, the cards with the words on the back are not part of the standard deck, and are thus not included. And of course, the first card is included in the set, since there was no clear boundary defined between the beginning of the challenge and the speaking.
