Yo.

So I live in Oregon, and have my whole life. I'm 19, single, and I work at Symantec. I love my job. I've always wanted to live in a foreign country for a few years, to see what it's like, and I figured that now is one of the few chances I'll get at doing something as pointless and crazy as that.

If I wanted to jump to different Symantec branches, I could go to Ireland, Japan, or Australia.

I'd love Japan, but I'd need to learn a business level of Japanese. While I think I could pull off the spoken language, I have no idea about the written one.

Ireland would be amazing, but I'd have to learn German, amongst other supported languages there, and that would be challenging. At least with Japanese I'm somewhat familiar with the language.

Australia I don't need to know anything prior. I don't really know much of anything about Australia. I know that a bunch of you guys on this forum are from there, so I wanted to ask. What's it like?

All I know is that you stick shrimp on the barbie every day, and you have spiders so big, that they have health bars. Some with mana bars too.

I've liked just about every Australian I've come across, which really puts a one up on Canadians. (DID I JUST SAY THAT OUT LOUD?)

Symantec has a spot in Perth I believe. And some in Melbourne. How is it there?

If you REALLY want to move to a different country, I suggest moving to a country that has a culture similar to yours. This way you wont be moving to a hostile alien environment. This way you will be happy with your new home. And I know what I'm talking about. I also suggest moving to a country that doesn't hate foreigners.

Perth is considered a backwater hole (and I should know... I lived there for 23 years!)
Melbourne is the 2nd biggest city and is considered the cultural capital.

Cost of living is outrageous... we have some of the most expensive utilities / rents / just about everything else in the world... the joys of living on an island with a small population, out on its lonesome...

Or maybe I'm just glad to have gotten the **** out of dodge... someone else might chime in with a less biased opinion :P

I heard cost of living in Australia is high but I also heard most jobs there pay you a decent amount. Not like how it is in the USA, right now. Cost of living high and most jobs available = fast food.

Cost of living is very high here, but that basically just reflects the high cost of labor. What I mean is, average wages here are a lot higher than say in the US, so it levels itself out in a way.

EDIT: If you get a decent job that is.

And that would be me :)

I grew up in Perth and left there at the age of 16 (1991). I found Perth to be great. The people are friendly and it was sort of country-like (everyone knew everyone and all that jazz)

Definite shock moving to Melbourne O_o Kinda like moving from the friendly country to the omgdon'tlookortalktoanyone city

Perth was pretty peaceful; great beaches, small city, and miles to drive to places (seeing as you're in the US that wouldn't seem so bad to you)

Good fishing, some great places to see, and some nice day driving trips if you're up for it

I'm not sure what Perth is like now though. I've heard it's grown somewhat so things might have changed. I wonder if there's anyone that's currently residing in Perth that can give an accurate assessment

Cost of living in many of the large cities is ridiculous. Seeing as Symantec will put you at either Sydney or Melbourne, you might want to seriously consider if you'll be able to afford the prices. What's more, our public transport (at least in metropolitan Sydney, where I'm from) isn't that great, so the further you live from the CBD (which is where Symantec Sydney is) the more you'll have to consider how far away you want to be. Luckily, Symantec Sydney is smack bang on the top of Town Hall, so you won't get lost walking around.

As for Culture? I think we're often referred to as the 51st/ 52nd State of America, so you don't have to worry much about clashing :P

Reminds me of those idiots who were ranting on about how they were moving to Canada if the healthcare reform was passed and failing to note the sheer irony in that statement.
