hedwards: People don't know any better? A lot of people were introduced to the FPS genre via Halo and honestly, they don't know any better.

It might be elitist, but I've never played an FPS on a console that could compete with a typical PC FPS.
I'm fully aware of all the 'classic' FPSes and I still enjoy Halo.

Can't I enjoy both kinds?

If Halo was multiplat, you couldn't compete in both.

Compete in what manner?

Or am I just misunderstanding your terms?
Probably the most expensive genre to develop moved to the platform where it can sustain itself.

Who would have thought.

Consoles are able to offer an incredible markup where as in the PC, you better no offer anything for 60 dollars, or you'll be called mad. We're very stingy with our money and quite choosy.
Because a lot of gamers didn't start out as PC players, so they really don't have a point of reference. For them pad is the way to control a game. And FPS games have for a long time been the games what made money even in PC environment, so the devs just kept pushing them to consoles as well.

TBH, perhaps, but a decade on and I'm still nauseated by the Halo fanbois.

Well I'm not one of them, I can assure you.

Just I get my hackles up whenever someone indirectly tells me what I should and shouldn't enjoy.

TBH, you do have to admit that Halo pretty much destroyed the FPS genre. There have been a few decent FPS games since Halo was released, but all too many of them have taken design cues from there. And the subsequent FPS explosion on console really didn't help things at all.

*shrug* Never met a fanboi.

I'm not really all that emotionally invested in FPSes (my favourite shooter is Bioshock, so assume as you wish). I don't really think it's the fault of one successful game if other developers want to chase the money by making it blatantly similar. It's the fault of those developers.

I never see the same thing said about Diablo-clones, for example. But, naturally, when it's contained within one platform, there probably isn't as much bitterness

Sure, I'm not about to deny that variety is desperately needed in the market, and I would much rather that each platform plays to its strengths rather than be multiplatform; such as local multiplayer in stuff like Timesplitters.

"20 quadrillion flies cannot be wrong, shit is great"

FPS on consoles are not any different from the F2P (mobile) games - the guys and gals who play them havent played anything else before. To them its natural and the way its always been. Also unlike pc players, console players are used to pay some serious premium for the games...and the the DLC to boot.

If my memory serves me right, this clip here had some interesting thinking about the issue (PC-consoles) in general: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xtTAkKBvGys -> do take note the year of video btw.

I like many console FPS games. I also like many PC FPS games. I got into FPS on PC but I can't imagine a world where I did not play Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Timesplitters series or the Halo series. Then you have arcade shooters like House Of The Dead. I love them.

scampywiak: You can't say that about a high level FPS any more than you can about Street Fighter or Star Craft.
Lol, what's a "high level FPS"? I think you're making too many unnecessary assumptions about FPS games and consoles, and also about games and their "levels" or whatever. For example, SF and SC are both fun games, which someone might enjoy equally depending on what they want to play.

I don't think there's any inherent superiority in FPS games which can be played solely via M+KB; better accuracy does not equal better quality of game fun.

To be fair, it does depend on the style of game. A game like Counter-Strike - that requires pin-sharp reactions and accuracy - isn't the best fit for a console, nor is one with inventory management, really. But like I said, I would rather things play to their strengths.

What I'm saying is that fun can be impacted by the 'fit' of the system for the game.

I hate FPS on consoles when they are a PC port (whatever the way).

However, the Metroids on gamecube are really worth the console IMO, because the gameplay is really tailored for the device, there is no dumbing down of preexisting mechanics.
