tburger: To me music is much more important than GFX in building games atmosphere. Just listen to the music from Fallout, Planscape Torment, UFO1&2…
Completely agree. Some of my favorite soundtracks are Tropico, Grim Fandango, and Fallout. Sound sets the atmosphere much better than graphics ever can.
Its can be very beneficial to the mood of the scene but for the vast majority of the time it pisses me off because noone knows how to mix music so it supports rather than overwhelms dialogue. When you have to turn the music down to 30% to reliably hear dialogue its a sign of something wrong
Got me thinking about all the great game soundtracks I've heard over the years. Well here's a few of them, with YouTube links if you want to hear clips. Some of these are available on GoG, hopefully the others will be too eventually.

Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura
Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn
Icewind Dale
King's Bounty: The Legend
Mass Effect
Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer
Total Annihilation
X3: Reunion

When I think of old games, its usually the songs I think about, which then get stuck in my head, and not the actual game.
50%. It has always been like this and will always be: one of my most "private" pleasures is to play the old arcades till the latest stages just to hear the catchy tunes played there (like in Wonderboy in Monster Land, for instance)....

Tallima: I was just evaluating HoMM 4 and when I thought about the music, I was terrified. It was well done, just repititious.

I've also made a Jeremy Soule mix ( http://www.gog.com/en/mix/games_with_music_by_jeremey_soule ), who is a composer of music that I just absoulely love.

I recently bought a game b/c it said on its cover "Music by Jeremy Soule".

But when we buy games, we almost always look at reviews and the developer, and that's about it. Right? (I could be wrong) But when we play it, music, voiceovers and graphics are pivotal and even rival (or possibly "complete") gameplay in some instances.

When it comes to games, how important is the music to you? And, got any favs?

---------------
by the way, my top music games are probably (in no particular order):

Icewind Dale
Guild Wars
Oblivion/Morrowind
Imperium Galactica 2
Legend of Zeldas
----------------
Lets put it this way, in games with a lot of meat ahd depth, I will sometimes turn off the music so that I can hear the sound effects and voices easier.

But in simplistic games like Beat Hazard and Arcadia, music IS 95% of those games. In fact I bought Arcadia ONLY for it's soundtrack which is comprised of just one song.
not very important.
Most of the time I don't even pay attention to it. I actually think a lot of videogame music is obnoxious

Lol. I forget what I was playing recently but it had a screaming death metal soundtrack and I wanted to throw myself out of a window. I used to pretend that shit was cool back when I was sixteen but I'm an old man now and my nerves can't handle it any more. XD
The weird thing is I like music way way more than I like videogames.

and this song is awesome. I'm always happy when it pops up in a Little Big Planet 2 level

I played through Devil May Cry 4 a few months ago. Fun, but Dante's combat music is just the same crappy death metal track over and over. It gets old very quickly.

Nero's wasn't death metal, but it was just as repetitive and almost as bad.
Not important at all. I usually turn off the BGM anyway.
Good music can really set a scene and be a great addition to a cinematic game. Mass Effect's music is probably the best recent example of this.

However music would be pretty far down the list for me, behind other non-gameplay elements like writing, graphics and art design.
Music is fairly important to me as I love listening to video game music a lot more than I like to listen to modern day music. here are some links of some and hope to put mor up in this thread.

Arc Rise Fantasia: A JRPG that I have been playing for quite awhile on the Wii. The person who did most of the music in this game is Yasunori Mitsuda, who you may know his music from Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross needless to say he knows what he is doing, here are some songs

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iqi-iPFgoG8
nice relaxing theme for one of the biggest cities in the game. Usually town themes in jrpg's are not really that memorable but this is an exception. Great song.

a great boss theme for mostly optional bosses. Man if someone told me putting violins in a song like this would work I would laugh at them but here it sounds awesome.

Donkey Kong country 2
My personal favorite game of all time here, DKC 2 is the perfect sequel to the first. David Wise who also worked on the first really steped it up a bit.

Best song in the game and that is all you need to know.

Great piece that sounds orcastrated but it is not. fits the castle levels really well.

Secret of Mana
One of my favorite rpgs ever right here great game. Hiroki Kikuta is the composer here, he did a great job here. He also worked on many of the other mana games in case you didn't know.

last dungeon in the game theme right here. Great song that fits the last dungeon, approching final boss feel.

This song is very, very relaxing. Just saying.

M.U.S.H.A
best Genesis/Megadrive shooter right here. best soundtrack too. the composer for this game is Toshiaki Sakoda, don't really know what other titles he worked on, all I know is that the music in this game is bad ass

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rxj6Vupkn38
If someone should ever tell you the Genesis/Megadrive games had bad music cause of the inferior sound chip than the snes. you should punch that guy in the face, kick him the balls, put ear phones on him and make him listen to this song, seriously.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tI_BYVMVaTQ
also a great song in the third level in the game and my personal favorite in the game.

That is all i have for now. may put up more if people want me too :D
