I intend to give it a shot at some point, mainly due to it introducing mouse-look. But right now I'm enjoying the "pure" DOOM experience (with slightly edited controls)
Yep, got it in an Indie Royale bundle a while ago, and I've beaten it.
And now I've beaten episode 4. I agree with the above comment on it being worse than the previous ones, as the difficulty curve was all over the place, and it also had the nasty tendency of making enemies appear very close behind you (or in some cases on all sides of you), which made it very hard to actually avoid taking damage, usually coming down more to luck than skill, unless you know exactly where the enemies will appear.

Somewhat related, here's a small tidbit on Doom 4:
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-08-05-id-softwares-first-attempt-at-doom-4-didnt-have-a-personality
....
But yea, Doom was just unbelievable. There was nothing like playing that for the first time. This music is etched into my brain.

Wasn't it some pedophile Facebook stalker that reported him?
Anyway, GOG should get Witchhaven, my CD copy never worked.
Also, here's to GOG signing up Zenimax through some magic miracle. Them posting a video at Quakecon is fingers crossed-worthy event.
Heretic... Hexen... Doom... drool?

Doom is an amazing classic. I have fond memories of when it was in it's prime. One of the best things about Doom is amazing fan community. Even 15+ years later I'll hear about some modification or level pack that is legendary (never heard of Brutal Doom, for example). I wish more modern games were that user friendly to allow created content.
Someone mentioned playing Doom on their iPhone, that's the craziest thing ever. If you have an iDevice also try the Doomsday line of games from General Arcade; Doomsday II: Legions of Hell has tons of free downloadable award winning Doom mod levels.

I'm totally confused here. Is the timeline or an OpEd piece?
OT: I can only assume the low rating for my OP means there are people in here who agree with the nuts who blame video games for violence. My question to you is, WHY ARE YOU HANGING OUT IN A GAME FORUM!? You don't see Tipper Gore going to Twisted Sister concerts! I give up man, to quote Ed Harris, "Everybody is insane everywhere!"

Bumping because it's the 20th anniversary of Doom.
Retrospective/interview articles:
The Verge
Wired
Time
Paste Magazine
Eurogamer
IGN - Full Episode 1 playthrough with John Romero commentary
Maybe the most influential PC game of all time? Either way, I can't believe it's been 20 years.

If you're looking for a new but familiar experience, I can recommend the "Brutal Doom" mod. It adds some modern features (like reload or gun sights), a lot more gore and blood and is even faster than the original.
If that description puts you off I can only say that I think it's very much in the same spirit and I enjoyed it much more than any modern shooter (not that they are all bad, but very different).

What do people think of more modern games like Painkiller and Serious Sam? I've not played them but I've heard people say they take some of the best aspects of older fps and bring them into the modern age. Is this true or not?
