It's considered one of the best space combat sims of all time, up there with TIE Fighter, but it's not an "open world trader" like Freelancer or Privateer.
The Freespace series is great. Unlike Freelancer, however, it's entirely mission-based and relies entirely on space combat.

Also, there's an active modding scene which provides the game with enhanced visuals, new game features and, of course, a growing number of new campaigns, some of which are really, really good.

are you talking about the first or the second one?
OK, let me take over it here. How does it compete with and is it similar to Starlancer? I like Starlancer, it's the first space-shooters I really owned and completed.

Strictly speaking, the second one, Freespace 2. Of course, there is the FSport mod...

I honestly haven't played either one, but from what I hear Freespace is much better.
Freespace is the best space combat sim out there - only surpassed by Freespace 2
I've been playin them since they got out, again and again, and they simply dont grow old or boring, especially with all the mods.

Doesn't really compare to Freelancer though, since their aint trade, mining and stuffs like that : you choose your payload, get out there killin the bad aliens, then get back to base for your next briefing.

OK, you got me sold here. I'll buy it later this week.
You should ask GOG for some tip from this sale.

If it worked that way GoG would already owe me quite a few games by now :D
I really loved starlancer and hope gog gets it. Even though it wasn't interactive, it was fun seeing yourself move around the ship to get from deck to deck and seeing people doing things in the background.
Freespace is similar to Starlancer, but it's even more similar to Wing Commander 3 and 4. Starlancer dumbed down or imperfectly reworked some Wing Commander aspects. Freespace enhanced them and packaged them in gorgeous visuals. If you like arcade space combat with lots of depth, and don't mind a linear mission storyline in place of dynamic open world, Freespace is hard to beat.

Oh, I loved freespace and agree. I just want as many space sims games as I can get, since there isn't that many of them sadly.

As for the game itself it's hard to say which one is better - I think they are both excelent space-sims. I preferred world of Starlancer over Freespace. This s-f "cold-war" setting, ships design (especially soviet carriers), red stars on ships etc - masterpiece.
