I also use the list-view sorted by purchase date, but the shelf was really nice to play around with. After I broke my manual sorting order (changed to sorted by name and then moved an item, which removed my old manual sort order) I'm too lazy to organize it again. Also I really miss the free spaces in the shelf for better organizing.

It would be nice to have an option to sort by genre and if game series would be sorted in the correct order, as example sequels with different names (Alien Nations together with Nations Gold) and the correct release order (Baldurs Gate 2 behind Baldurs Gate 1).

Edit: Oh, and sorting by published date would also be nice and funny ;-)

This. Also, it would be neat if we could have separate shelves for different genres or arbitrary categories.
I don't really - I have the 1 game I have completed 1st, then I look and think ****, I need more time lol :D
Genres.

First FPS, then third person games and platformers, followed by space-sims (including Raptor and Tyrian), then biggest categories: RPG and strategies and at the end of shelf are adventures.

Inside each category it's sorted in alphabetical order. (with the exception of Beyond Divinity being next to Divine Divinity while there should be Betryal at Krondor between them ;-))
I don't.

I use List view and I only view it long enough to download the game.

No sense organizing data that you have no control over since eventually it'll be lost or updated losing any of your changes.

keeveek: I use the "last purchased" option. It's the best one for me, tracking my backlog easily.
This. I've also hidden the free ones.

People who asign them manually for whatever reason why not just use one of those video game collection applications or services? I use Darkadia to keep track of games I've played, finished, bought etc..
OneNote page:

Games To Finish:

1.12
2.asdo
3.ashdahsd

When I finish a game, I remove it, and forget that it ever was in the backlog.

dirtyharry50: I like the default last one purchased order myself. I don't bother to do anything with it other than admire it from time to time, feeling grateful I have so many cool classic games now.
Same here. I used to be very OCD and borderline Type A personality, but I think too many years of obsessing over useless bullshit slowly cured me of that, lol. I have really learned to chillax these days, and go with the flow
I don't organize my shelf. I used to (sorting the games by categories, so that whenever I was in the mood to play e.g. a new RPG, I could look at the shelf and see which RPGs I had bought). But then an update to the page destroyed my order completely, and the new shelf doesn't allow gaps any more, so I can't separate the categories any more.
fIrst by Genre and subgenre(so first person RPGs like might and magic and Stonekeep are placed together) starting with RPGs and currently ending with racing/driving and then by series so Ultima 1-8 plus spin offs are all placed together.

The main reason is that I enjoy doing it. I actually don't do much with the GOG library except looking at the pictures from time to time. ;)

I've used Darkadia for a short while and now I'm using GCStar (offline), but as far as I know, while both work with categories, neither allows actual manual sorting (unless Darkadia has introduced that as a new feature during the last months).

Darkadia's shelf only shows a few games at a time. It takes a long to page through them. GOG's shelf is displayed all at once. GOG's box graphics are also more consistent and polished giving me warmer fuzzies.

Like Leroux, my shelf is just for looking at. I wouldn't use other features.

I would be using Steam, especially seeing as you can do the custom grid icons now, but I can't seem to get my shortcuts for GoG games to work in Steam :(

That's true, I agree, but at Darkadia I can check my gaming history, not just GOGs.
