Simoneer: Off-topic: How does one properly multi-quote? This is a mess...
Easiest answer: don't multi-quote. The quote system here is rudimentary at best and when you start multi-quoting and nesting too many quotes into others, it kind of has an aneurysm.

However, if you must do it, it is done just like on any other BBCode-based forum (opening and closing "QUOTE" tags).

I suppose quote tags aren't too inconvenient. I do, however, wish the site (and many other sites) had proper multi-quoting systems (like marking posts and then clicking "new post", having them all show up, all seperate).

Runehamster: GOG rocks. The downloader, I have come to believe, is industrial sabotage perpetrated by their enemies with the intent of bringing down the company,
I don't know maybe I am just lucky but I never had any issue with the downloader and I use it for all my GOG downloads.

BMayzak: Fair enough. I'll just steer clear of the downloader; I realize it's not the games or gog.com itself that are bad, but I do hope they fix the download client if they continue to offer it.

Thanks for listening.
Good man. At least you posted instead of running off silently. And it wasn't chock-full of profanity, which I appreciate.

I constantly have issues - it corrupts itself if my internet connection goes out, so I have to uninstall and reinstall it to use it again. It also has some sort of bizarre problem, I suspect a memory leak, so if you queue up a bunch of files and leave it, it will run slower and slower until it stops working. I actually had it crash a very old computer that way.

I don't think that GOG pay anything like enough attention to the first impression they give people. While that was far more damaging around the time of the relaunch (especially considering the increased interest in GOG back then) there are still too many problems remaining. It was one thing for these problems to be around during the beta - it was a beta after all. But now people just aren't going to be as forgiving.

Damuna: I'm not sure why they decided to leave "beta", really.
Leaving beta wasn't so much the problem unto itself. The problem was releasing an entirely new and untested version of the site at the same time and leaving broken features like the downloader in place. Why the hell they didn't use the beta to test the new site I'll never know. Even a separate closed beta would have ironed out some problems). The end result was something worse than we ever had during beta.

BMayzak: I was recently made aware of GOG.com through Witcher 2's promotional advertising, which allows you to get the game from GOG.com. Poking through the site, I saw it has some great older games that I've been wanting to play, namely Baldur's Gate 2.

Unable to find it on Steam or D2D, I figured why not support Witcher's sister company.. I bought the game and downloaded the GOG downloader. Things were going great until the downloader froze at about 2GB and stopped responding altogether. I tried pausing the file, and nothing responded; I couldn't move the window, or even close it. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the GOG downloader, and the thing starting back up at 2GB/2.3GB progress, despite the previous files no longer existing... Now the file is "complete", but obviously corrupt and incomplete, but I have no idea how to clear the game and redownload it. Looking through the support, it looks like I'm going to have to jump through a lot of hoops to get the game I paid for. I've already spent way more time and effort than I've wanted to try and get this game to work. I feel like it would have just been easier to torrent it. I guess it serves me right.

I am steering my friends away from this site and definitely not buying Witcher 2 from here. I can't imagine trying to download a game that large from this installer.

I'm sure people love the DRM-free format, but at least on Steam I can reliably download my games with no hassle.
Hmm....you've described my experience with Greenman Gaming's Capsule. Normally the GoG downloader doesn't give me much trouble but I haven't tried it recently because my past few purchases were small enough in size to risk downloading through my browser.

But I would suggest first going to Start>Run and typing "%temp% and deleting everything in the folder that pops up (note that some files might not be deletable - that's normal).

Then uninstall the downloader and run a registry cleaner like Win Utilities (it's free).

Reboot your system and try downloading through browser or you can reinstall GoG downloader and try again.

You've kinda gummed it up in the process of attempting to fix it but it should've never cut out on you part way though.

The only thing I can think is that gog auto relocated the file's link (which most sites do for security reasons) and that gog downloader didn't pick up and adapt to the relocation (which its meant too).

And someone else here complained about this same thing happening a few days back.

It seems like they entered it though.

orcishgamer: If you go older than 1994 you're really starting to hit Amiga/C64 territory (and the ones we have seen are merely the 386 versions of games that were available on these platforms).
Only not quite as good as the Amiga versions. Let's face it: prior to Doom, the Amiga owned the PC in every way ;-)

I hope they either kill it, or switch the platform. A .NET based downloader would be just fine.

Damuna: You know, I was actually under the impression that GOG had stopped officially suggesting their downloader. Guess that was wishful thinking.
The thing is, I class this with the wishlist. They can just put a link up on the front page, even if they aren't exactly using the wishlist much, and it would help. Simply putting up a warning of some sort not to use the downloader might help 'til they fix it. Or at least a stickied FAQ on the front page listing common issues and solutions.
If I may post my first impression reading this thread (and it is a little bit my own pet hate...)

This person comes along and have an experience which leads to a personal view and a particular perception. He then tells about this experience and ten fan-boys jump out of the woodwork barking "you horrible person you, how dare you come here and tell us whats what. Your perception is not valid and meaningless. Not only that, you are quite stupid - off course you should not have used the downloader(?) everybody knows that. This is all your own fault and we are brilliant and exceptionally clever and GoG is perfect as it is".

There is only three responses to this - stand up for your views (in a completely new environment, with no friends) and risk more public 'spanking' or fall flat on your back apologising that this was the perception that you had (which the OP did..) The third of course is leave and never come back. I don't know about you, but I am not so sure if this is the way to:

a) welcome a new member
b) receive critique on something that we all knew where wrong to start with.

I must say that this apply to the beginning of the thread, it gets better as it goes along. But it goes to show how territorial some people can get?
So weird, many and many of you complain about the downloader - it never failed me once... I always use it! On two different comps too.

Oh well, just use the browser then.

You'll feel persecuted by my saying this, I know - I can only hope you're referring to me as part of the later thread. All I want to say is that for the most part, this thread has been agreeing with the poster on his problem and suggesting alternatives. Also, pointing out that the site itself is better than the OP supposed. This isn't fanboyism, anymore than my saying "cars use gas" is fanboyism, it's merely stating a fact. Secondly, I can't recall anyone insulting him or calling him stupid. I know several people agreed that the downloader shouldn't even be offered as an option, to avoid these mistakes.

I sense you've experienced the raw side of our community. I'm sorry for your bad experiences. I'm not trying to argue you out of your opinion, I'd just encourage assuming that people are trying to help, not hurt.
