I'm searching for a space combat game in which you play the commander
of a HUGE ship slugging it out.......think "Imperial Star Destroyer" size.
Fine if it gives you some other choices, but primarily just being on deck and giving
commands to the various stations, with lots of resources at your command.
I tried a Star Trek game a few years ago...there have been so many of them, and I don't remember the title. The actor who played Sulu in the original TV show did the narration.
The tutorial was HARD, and the interface had trillions to finy tiny tiny buttons. I hated it to the max.
Looking for something that puts you on deck to control a really BIG ship instead of all this "fighter jet" stuff....that's old. But.....you don't have to push every single tiny button yourself.....that's what the helmsman, communications officer, etc. are for!
Your suggestions of games that are like this are invited. Thank you.

Not really a bridge view but it does let you command one big ship.

Nexus ain't a bad game i just wish the dull english guy commanding the ship would keep his trap shut during the missions. Gimme a fist shaking, scene chewing Jim Kirk any day.
Oh and game designers who include a stealth mission in their games are hateful, evil bastards.

This.
Worth it for the mods alone. The Babylon 5 mod is stunning.
I should also mention Sins of a Solar Empire. It's more of a strategy game but it's still extremely good and highly moddable.

The game in question is probably one of the Battlecruiser games by Derek Smart. Some of them are even freeware now days.
Same games...none, but there are games that have some few similarities.
Starflight series
Parkan 2
Hard Nova
are some I can think of now, but there aren't many of them either.
Too bad I agree.
Universal Combat
I was trying to remember it all day. It's the same game as Battlecruiser 3000.
How about Rules of Engagement 1 + 2? Come to think of it, that series and the Breach series (which are inter-connectable) might be good ones to see if GOG can get!

I always fall asleep during the tutorial missions though. Wake up, switch off and forget about it. A week later I wonder "whats this Sins thing I never use that's taking up space on my hard drive?" and it gets uninstalled again until another dry spell.
The individual ship control is simplistic because the game is (eventually) about fleets and planets and resources and enjoying the stress of micromanaging a thousand things all at once,
I'll have to follow up some of the other suggestions in here though, the OP's premise is an interesting one. I know on the DS the just released Infinite Space comes close to the requirements.
Sins of a Solar Empire is a great game if you like space strategy, but in my opinion, only for multiplayer. When I play it with friends, we can play for hours before someone wants to go to sleep, but I rarely play it by myself.
I really wanted to love Sins, but I think the multiplayer just takes too long. Plus, a good chunk of that time is the end-game when its just a chore to capture all the remaining planets. Plus, I didn't think the gameplay was that great.
As for space flight sims, I picked up Starlancer at a gamestop for $2 like 5 or 6 years ago and had a lot of fun with it. It might be a little outdated now, but I enjoyed it.
For strategy games, I think Galactic Civs II takes the take. I also really love Imperium Galactica II, but its been years since I've played it so I'm not sure if its aged well.
If you want Pirates! in space, try Space Rangers 2. Its a pretty fun game, even if the graphics aren't great. Its definately an underrated gem.
Well, the Homeworld games sort of fit the bill, I guess.
