so after using steam for almost 2 years i've decided to expand, and GOG seemed the right place because there's so many "golden" oldies that are worth my time more than a lot of modern games.
so i'm gonna buy my first GOG game but i am undecided. they're cheap, which is a good thing, but i can only afford to spend so much each month so i have to pick them well.
i'm a big fan of RPGs, back in the day games like Baldur's Gate, Icewind dale and Fallout were my faves. since i already played Fallout 1 and 2 when they were released i was thinking of getting something else (i'll eventually get them as well of course, just doesn't seem like the best first purchase) and Arcanum got my interest. seems pretty good, i remember wanting the game back then but never got around to play. what are your thoughts? and does it work fine on windows 7 64 bit?
i'm open to other suggestions on similar games.
here are what i'd call "requirements" from my part:
- obviously has to run on W7 64 bits
- Great story and characters
- While i don't expect the graphics to impress at all, i don't feel like playing a game that can only be played on extremly low resolutions...at least something more average.
- preferrably not over 5.99$
one question to european users; when you buy games on GOG, do we EU dudes pay some sort of additional tax? like conversion fees or whatever...
thanks in advance people
I can vouch that Arcanum works on Windows 7 64 bit - you may need to get the unofficial community patch (fixes a bunch of bugs to boot). I run the retail CD version of Arcanum on W7x64 w/ the community patch and have no issues. Arcanum was made by the folks who worked on Fallout 1 & 2 so you sort of know what to expect story wise.
Divine Divinity is a pretty decent RPG with a level up system that allows you to mix and match skills from the 3 main classes into a hybrid. It has a decent, if slightly generic, story line and some interesting people to meet along the way.

Hi and welcome!
I don't know if Arcanum runs well under Win7 64; it *should*, but I recommend poking (or maybe posting) around in the game's own forum here.
As for other recommendations... If you want an RPG, get Betrayal at Krondor. You can't really beat that in terms of characters and story. If you don't stick to the genre, you may want to check out Sacrifice, it also has an interesting story and is a very good RTS anyway.
As for the transactions, the prices include VAT, so no "penalty" for being European here. Your bank *may* impose some transaction fee, though.
Well, one game fits you nicely: Arcanum, as you have said.
Betrayal at Krondor is also an excellent RPG with great story, characters and writing, graphics are a bit ... let's say hardcore, however. And I know for a fact that Arcanum runs well under win7 32 bit, dunno about 64bit.
Oh, and GoG's charging only what they say they'll charge - price of the game, nothing more.
welcome in here
I am running gogs version of Arcanum on my Windows 7 Pro 64bit machine as well as my W7 64 bit home laptop. Works fine. No problems at all.
thanks everyone for the replies
both arcanum and DD seem pretty interesting. i googled and it seems there are demos for both games, will try them before i take my pick. they might not work well because they're probably older builds but let's see
Arcanum is brilliant. No problems on W7 64-Bit. Also look into the Fallout games especially if you are an old school RPG fan.
Welcome to GOG!
Arcanum does seem like the most logical choice if you're willing to put the time into modding it, as the base game is pretty rough.
But at least the dodgy copy protection of the disc version won't be a problem.
Welcome. You can try Vampire Redemption too.
Salutations, newcomer.
Arcanum is really good, if you're patient and don't try to run through the game with anything that's not combat-capable.
Divine Divinity is pretty good too, if you're into hack-'n-slash Diablo-like gameplay.
Alternately, there's Betrayal at Krondor and Return to Krondor.
Hello and welcome to GOG.com! :)
I recommend Arcanum, as do most people in this thread. Great story and characters - check. Has a mod for higher res graphics - check. Not over $5.99 - check.
Betrayal at Krondor is also good too.
i decided to get Arcanum, will probably get DD as my next purchase in a month or so.
thanks for the input :)

Welcome to GOG and good choice. Make sure to check the Arcanum forums for adding in the addons as there are some great additional mods for this game. Have Fun.

You didn't actually read the OP, did you? ;-)
