My FPS days were in the good old mid-90s: Duke 3d, Blood, Shadow Warrior. But I'd like to revisit two other old classics: Heretic and Hexen. What are the odds that those turn up on GOG one of these days? I miss that gritty dark-fantasy vibe.
NVM, found it on Steam. I'm a doofus.

Heretic and Hexen are available from Steam.

Considering the IP owners really don't like people's money, and love to restrict the game to certain regions, I don't think we'll see them on GOG anytime soon.
id Software owns Heretic and HeXen, so GOG would need Zenimax.
Loved Heretic. Very brightly colored, fun maps with great decor. It was a monster hunting and dark devilish doings ... with a smile. I was terrifically disappointed in the grim, limited color palettes that came after.

Yes, and they are DRM free. You can backup the install directories and they work without Steam and without re-installation due to DosBox. You can also set them up with a source port like GZDoom and they are still DRM free. For instance you can just backup the folders and move them to a new PC and they play right out of the folder.

So... as much as a GOG release would be nice, it's not really essential.

You mean Hexen and Hexen 2? I rather liked them actually.
Cheers all for the responses, glad to hear there are others who like this game too. The only reason I'd like to see this game on GOG is that I rarely have problems making purchases here, whereas I tend to get troublesome 'your address does not matching your billing information' issues with Steam that require multiple logins and other nuisances.

Kind of feel that Heretic could do with a 21st century remake, though.

Be careful with such wishes, lest you get a watered-down abomination.

At least Heretic/Hexen already is a first person shooter. That's usually the first thing an update changes a game to. XCOM my ass.
I'm pretty sure there's already texture packs for Hexen (and possibly Heretic) for the replacement game engines. It's been a while since I checked so google is your friend here.

I see we have forgotten the 3rd person perspective Heretic 2 already. Not a surprise, the story was good enough but the gameplay was less than thrilling.

I too would like to go back and whomp on those prime evils and be a heretical elf again though, it was a blast.

No, there was an original heretic before the first Hexen.

Lol, I loved Hexen for it's atmosphere and levels with character, and didn't care too much for Heretic.

Most people said the same thing. The Hexen/Quake visual style took over from the DOOM/Heretic style with great success, at least partly because the games kept getting more visually sophisticated in other ways and the ability to hook up with other players just got better and better.

Me, I stare at the dull insides of offices all day long. Everything is already beige and grey, and already has its own kind of oppressive industrial gloom. Doom and the first Heretic were like opening the door for me; Hexen and Quake were like the teacher telling you to come inside after recess.
These work beautifully on netbooks!
