snowkatt: ...err care to run that by me again ?
my gibberish filter is broken
He says that he feels GOG should use more noble/elegant terming as a premium platform instead of advertising like a $19.99 knife set on an infomercial. Something along those lines.

I don't see it, but to each their own. ^^

Sdfghj: Well, I have to agree. EA giving anything out of the goodness of their heart would be ... remarkable.
February 14, 2014, Dungeon Keeper was free on GOG. That is an EA game given for free, possibly as an apology for the mobile game.

The giveaway is amazing like this is amazing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-rTcfKfXwqo

Amazing:
- launching a spacecraft a decade or more in the past to rendezvous with a fast-moving comet... and it succeeds!
- the wonder, beauty, and complexity of procreation, and that everything goes right most of the time.

Not amazing:
- giving away an old computer game, available here for at least a couple years now, for which you would normally pay something like 6-10 bucks.

It's nice of them to do so but it's hardly amazing. Marketing, sure - it's definitely marketing. Amazing? Uhh, no. A little perspective goes a long way.

Nephilim983: at least you guys got your free game...I'm still waiting for an email for the game :(
avatar
moonshineshadow: Did you check if it was added to your shelf? because mine was added, but the email confirming it arrived a little late :D
yeah, I'm checking my library like on every hour from yesterday hoping it will pop up but still nothing. My brother claimed his gift same time i did, and he got his game yesterday...so, hoping I'll get it soon

Shadowstalker16: When was the last time EA gave you a GAME (NOT DLC) without DLC for free?
avatar
JMich: Are you asking about a game that doesn't have DLC? February 14, 2014 on GOG, and currently on Origin.
Or are you asking about a game that has DLC but the DLC weren't given? If yes, October 8, 2014, Dragon Age: Origins on Origin.

And then there are also the timed games one can play.
I basically meant that EA wouldn't give anything of polish away for free. They did Origins, but other than that, most of the games they give way have some strings attached; more so than when GOG does so. When GOG gives away a game, they do it out of the goodness of their hearts or to encourage new people that this is a batter platform than Steam. Origin does it either to make us buy DLC or gives away games no one there would want.

February 14, 2014. Dungeon Keeper was given for free on GOG. It's an EA game, so EA was the one that had to give the OK to GOG. GOG wasn't the one to make it happen, though they may have suggested it.
Your comment about GOG games being given out of the goodness of their hearts is true for the games owned by GOG, or more specifically, CD Projekt Red, aka The Witcher franchise. All other freebies given by GOG were done with the publishers' consent, which means Rebellion, EA, Triumph Studios etc
So yes, on February 14, 2014, EA did give us a full game with no strings attached.
Hmm... right or wrong day of the week?

I know Crusader: No Remorse is a bit dated and the controls are awkward by today's standards, but not polished? really?

And what about Dead Space, or Wing Commander III? and I would never say that Plants VS Zombies is not a polished game.... or Battlefield 3....

I said EITHER unpolished or uninteresting to most people there. Dead Space is an exception since it has no DLC and is quite new (saying most people there won't have interest in older games).

Indeed, they are games without DLC and hence no strings attached free stuff. But I was just saying its rare for any major publisher/ developer to give away free stuff no strings attached.

but it does happen

and EA apparantly seems to be doing it the most of all

Shadowstalker16: When GOG gives away a game, they do it out of the goodness of their hearts
Err, no? They do it to draw new customers, or to please their customer base (i.e. us) so that we will continue to buy from them, or they do it to promote other games and draw new players into the series, or...

GOG is a business. They do things for profit. They simply try to please their consumer base, rather than rip them off, because that's good business practice. And I respect them for it.

Add to this that most "free games" are free because the publisher/dev/rightholder agreed to it.
We dirty fat uncouth Americans...
