The first file had different speeds each time I downloaded it - sometimes it was 500 kb/s, then it would be something like 700, then next time I tried it, I'd get something like 650. The others were fairly consistent though.

Wishbone: talk about this round of download tests
Hmm, what did I miss? I can't find any news posting or a sticky or anything relating to download tests? Am I just being left out, or is there something I'm too dumb to find? ;)

No, you just arrived too late. You joined in December 2010, and the last time they did this was earlier than that.

Ah, thanks, I was puzzled because you created the topic today ;)

Oh, then I think I misunderstood you. I thought you were puzzled about the previous round of tests (because I spoke of "this round"). No, they're running download tests right now, but you're right, the thread isn't stickied, and doesn't stand out much. You can find it here. There's a chance to win a free game too, if you participate.

Thanks a bunch, just found it like 10 minutes before you replied ;)
It got to have been back at page 2-3 and was pushed up only recently.
Kind of makes you wonder why they didn't use that as 'become a GoG hero'-news posting event. Would have suited both the premise of a neat contest and could have likely used some public relations work, or promotion at least.
My only inconsistency was regarding time of testing. I started the testing in the evening and my connection was 19.4 Mbps and Link 1 was about 1.9MB/s then had to do something else and redid the tests early in the morning and got about 24.5 Mbps with 2.3 MB/s download for most links. Less people using it I suppose.

I suppose that's why we ran a speedtest before doing the downloads.

And from what I see with them also offering free games a lot of people tested this. In a sense I suspect it might be some sort of load test for Witcher 2 release.
