2011 has been a fantastic year for GOG.com, let's make it even better and make the last push to achieve the 6 million unique downloaded games milestone.

During our presentation at the CD Projekt Fall 2011 Conference we've shared some numbers that show how successful this year was for GOG.com, all that was possible thanks to you - our great community. One of the big milestones we'd like to celebrate with you is the 6 million unique downloaded games! Help us achieve this number and we'll launch a time-limited special offer for all GOG.com users!

Note that when we say "unique games downloaded," that means redownloading games that you have already downloaded before won't increment the counter.

When the counter on the main page of the website hits 6 million, two exciting things will happen. First off, the lucky user who downloaded our 6 millionth unique game will receive everything that's currently in the catalog, absolutely free! Secondly, everyone who has an account on GOG.com will be able to download Broken Sword: Shadow of The Templars Director’s Cut for free, thanks to Sir Charles Cecil and Revolution Software. The offer will be valid only for 48 hours starting from hitting the milestone, so be sure to check GOG regularly or follow us on and [url=https://www.facebook.com/gogcom]Facebook. Let's get cracking to unlock this achievement as soon as possible - it's all in your hands now!

dbcooper: I took several samples of sales values based on loading the gog.com website over a 24 hour period, put them in a spreadsheet, graphed it and performed a linear regression (it fit well).
Lol! GOG's 6 millionth download must be an event if it can bring D.B. Cooper out of hiding!

You know he has the money to buy the whole catalog a few times over. Although mayhaps he will just steal it and then jump out of the plane...again.

MichaelFurlong: Does anyone know if downloads are counted when you add a game to the downloader or when you initiate downloading from the GOG downloader?
I would expect that it counts the download upon its completion.
I think the counter will slow down, and ultimately stop around 5999990.

Why? Because no one dares to download anything anymore, everyone is just eyeing the counter with their finger on the download button, trying to save their precious TeenAgent and Tyrian2000 downloads to the sweetspot.

It is like those action movies where the hero and the bad guy are pointing guns to each other, but neither one dares to pull the trigger. I never got the logic in that though, wouldn't the one who shoots first win every time? So why wait?

Well, the counter would not stop. There will still be people ignoring this offer, just there to get a game without feverishly eyeing the counter.

jorlin: It might flatten out a bit once the D&D offer is no longer valid.

dbcooper: I did this too, with a little more OCD. I took several samples of sales values based on loading the gog.com website over a 24 hour period, put them in a spreadsheet, graphed it and performed a linear regression (it fit well).

My data: OpenOffice Spreadsheet (ODS 20KB)

Based on this (questionable) analysis, the 6M mark will be reached this Thursday (9/29) at 8AM CDT.

GOG.com's sales counter javascript apparently varies the downloadCounterTempo, whether or not that's based in reality. FWIW, I reloaded a few minutes apart (just now) and saw 0.33, 0.35, and 0.36.
5 samples is not enough to make a reliable projection, but based on your spreadsheet, it shows a more-or-less linear progression during the weekend.

But it would be cool if it stopped, no?

Oh, and I'd REALLY hate it if someone who doesn't even care about the competition would win it! He (or she, or it) would probably be like: "Nice, so now I own all the GoG games... whatever.".

I am a bit curious about a part of the counting mechanic.
If I pause the gog downloader and add games to it, do they then count as started downloads? or will I be able to use it as a lotto? would be kind of fun at close to the mark just have it dl 6-16 games, and hope one of those hits the mark. (of course of various sizes, and from my wishlist). ;) (as if i needed more incensitive to empty that list)..
So, Do it count as started when added to gog downloader or when its put to download? as the Downloader do seem to fetch some info on adding to list?

TrollumThinks: I dunno, it'll take me a week to DL them all LOL
And I'd expect it to speed up as we get nearer the mark (with a final big jump as many people try to be 'the one' )

This might not be the 'usual' download pace (I've heard people buy games and not download them yet) but spurred on by the big counter itself.

I've decided not to try for the 6M prize (I'll DL my stuff some time before and after the 'mark'). Truthfully it'd probably be wasted on me LOL
I'd love the rpgs and point'n'clicks but the shooters and rtss wouldn't get much play.
Better it go to an 'all-round' gamer and/or someone who regularly buys from gog and might give back to the community.
I'll take the free BS1 and be happy :) (not to mention all those D&D games I just bought will keep me busy for a long time)
Absolutely, I'm with you.

I have the "feeling" that although it says "downloads", they might mean "purchases". Thus, if I am correct, buying the game and placing it in your virtual stash in your account already counts towards the 6 million mark.

One reason I feel that is because that ticker is going up as fast as a gasoline pump's credit when I refill.
;-)
Bought and downloaded all D&D games that I didn't already own on here, so I've done my part. Now hand over your Broken Swords! :D

GOG clarified this point earlier in the thread. It is indeed downloads and not purchases that count.
Wow, only 6 million? I thought it must be more. :-) Well, to me, this can mean only one thing: get more games. :-)

Congratulations, and thanks.

In all honesty this counter seems a fake. It seems simply a countdown (with up numbers).
But everyone is invited to wonder... ;)

I thought that too TBH. The fact that there is one download every single second seems a bit suspicious to me.
