2011 has been a fantastic year for GOG.com, let's make it even better and make the last push to achieve the 6 million unique downloaded games milestone.

During our presentation at the CD Projekt Fall 2011 Conference we've shared some numbers that show how successful this year was for GOG.com, all that was possible thanks to you - our great community. One of the big milestones we'd like to celebrate with you is the 6 million unique downloaded games! Help us achieve this number and we'll launch a time-limited special offer for all GOG.com users!

Note that when we say "unique games downloaded," that means redownloading games that you have already downloaded before won't increment the counter.

When the counter on the main page of the website hits 6 million, two exciting things will happen. First off, the lucky user who downloaded our 6 millionth unique game will receive everything that's currently in the catalog, absolutely free! Secondly, everyone who has an account on GOG.com will be able to download Broken Sword: Shadow of The Templars Director’s Cut for free, thanks to Sir Charles Cecil and Revolution Software. The offer will be valid only for 48 hours starting from hitting the milestone, so be sure to check GOG regularly or follow us on and [url=https://www.facebook.com/gogcom]Facebook. Let's get cracking to unlock this achievement as soon as possible - it's all in your hands now!

chibizoid: I have the "feeling" that although it says "downloads", they might mean "purchases". Thus, if I am correct, buying the game and placing it in your virtual stash in your account already counts towards the 6 million mark.

One reason I feel that is because that ticker is going up as fast as a gasoline pump's credit when I refill.
;-)

yyahoo: GOG clarified this point earlier in the thread. It is indeed downloads and not purchases that count.
Wow!!! That means that their sales could be even triple the number! I have bought already 5 games from them (and this is just my ssecond day here), but have been able to dowload only 2 (internet speed). If this is common, imagine the amount of games sold but still to be downloaded! Fantastic! This is great, since it means their success will make them last in business a loooooooooong while. Like Stimpy used to say: "Happy happy joy joy"!

TrollumThinks: This might not be the 'usual' download pace (I've heard people buy games and not download them yet) but spurred on by the big counter itself.

I've decided not to try for the 6M prize (I'll DL my stuff some time before and after the 'mark'). Truthfully it'd probably be wasted on me LOL
I'd love the rpgs and point'n'clicks but the shooters and rtss wouldn't get much play.
Better it go to an 'all-round' gamer and/or someone who regularly buys from gog and might give back to the community.
I'll take the free BS1 and be happy :) (not to mention all those D&D games I just bought will keep me busy for a long time)
Yeah, I've already downloaded all my games anyway, so it doesn't matter ... got the broken sword series too, so I'm just excited about the milestone :)

i wonder how this counter has anything to do with the number of downloads. it will count up consistently even if you disconnect the net, and if you refresh the page it matches up perfectly, so its more like a bog standard timed countdown.
I dont like these shenanigans

I'd prefer it if the counter was completely disconnected from the count itself. Anything to prevent sniping.

I have noticed otherwise. I left the page open for a couple of hours and refreshed. The counter jumped back around 20. Also, I have noticed the counter speed vary on various refreshes from 1 a second to 1 every 3 seconds (at the moment it is one every 2 seconds).

I'd say, think of the counter as a guide. It won't be 100% correct and the longer you leave the page on it, the greater the error.

My guess is, and this has probably been mentioned before, that there is a base number that is updated regularly that your browser gets when loading the page. It also gets the download rate calculated by the number of recent downloads (i.e. how many downloads were there in the past minute), and it uses these to count up.

You then end up with a good approximation of the current status.
I think GOG is near 6M downloads, and to boost sells they have put up a countdown of some sort.
From an IT point of view the counter isn't accurate in any way, no matter the algorithm you will employ.
If at a certain time you have 10 or 100 or 1000 download a refresh of the page should bump the counter by that amount.
That's not the case.

The one thing I found upsetting, aside the technical implication that are irrelevant, is the "non transparency" about this counter.
Actually been watching this for a few days until I realized that perhaps I should log at make it official. Very hypnotic.

Seriously...free swag would be great... or a memento of the event.

Cheers,

bardwso
hehehe - I have it in the bag ... thanks to the boys and girls at CERN ;)

TheEnigmaticT: You know he has the money to buy the whole catalog a few times over. Although mayhaps he will just steal it and then jump out of the plane...again.
Had the money. It isn't cheap being on the run for 40 years. I have to wait for GOG sales events these days.
I need some sleep and then it's straight to work afterwards for 8 hours. And it's only 76k downloads left. I'm obviously not winning this :)

I wouldn't be surprised if GOG hasn't already hit 6 million and they just want to make it look cool. The chance of sniping really is impossible.

Accurate sniping, sure. But holding back for to a specific time to increase your chance, that's pretty definite by what we know.

The chances of them improving their odds by doing that is marginal at best.
Come go and see, will not regret it Oh look
