2011 has been a fantastic year for GOG.com, let's make it even better and make the last push to achieve the 6 million unique downloaded games milestone.

During our presentation at the CD Projekt Fall 2011 Conference we've shared some numbers that show how successful this year was for GOG.com, all that was possible thanks to you - our great community. One of the big milestones we'd like to celebrate with you is the 6 million unique downloaded games! Help us achieve this number and we'll launch a time-limited special offer for all GOG.com users!

Note that when we say "unique games downloaded," that means redownloading games that you have already downloaded before won't increment the counter.

When the counter on the main page of the website hits 6 million, two exciting things will happen. First off, the lucky user who downloaded our 6 millionth unique game will receive everything that's currently in the catalog, absolutely free! Secondly, everyone who has an account on GOG.com will be able to download Broken Sword: Shadow of The Templars Director’s Cut for free, thanks to Sir Charles Cecil and Revolution Software. The offer will be valid only for 48 hours starting from hitting the milestone, so be sure to check GOG regularly or follow us on and [url=https://www.facebook.com/gogcom]Facebook. Let's get cracking to unlock this achievement as soon as possible - it's all in your hands now!

crazy_dave: I don't think that is accurate. After all with a DRM-free gaming site, there is not much distinction between "downloaded" and "on the game shelf". Obviously I can't say for certain, but it wouldn't make much sense to me. More likely it is similar to what they did for Jagged Alliance - it was offered free for a limited time.

EDIT: Ninja'd by the T awhile ago and Fujek now. :)

TheEnigmaticT: Let me clarify this: for 48 hours, we will drop the price of Broken Sword to "free". If you add it to your cart and check out, you will not pay for it and It will remain on your shelf forever. If you don't add it to your cart yourself during those 48 hours, though, it will not be yours for free.

Is that clear?
So there is no, replacement gift for those who already OWN broken sword like you used to do? damn. This was the first givaway I already owned the gift, and its the first one there isnt a replacement for owning it already

I'm in that position as well. As a sign of my sheer indignant outrage, I will post a frowny face.

...
I can't bring myself to do it.

Eh, Considering the event I am happy enough for GOG that i couldnt post a sad face over it. Its just odd since they normally do think of that. Really though, I think the main thing we have to celebrate right now is the 6mil downloads anyway.

orcishgamer: There's current games with great stories. I'd be shocked if she didn't like Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom, for example.
avatar
taczillabr: Thanks for the recommendation, orcish. Although Majin is PS3 and 360 only, I'll look into it...

I just said that in the past there were way more games focused on a good story. Also I'd like more Heavy Rain-like games to be released, more interaction options.

Ni no Kuni for PS3 might end being good, too.
Enslaved: Odyssey to the West is good too, though I really hated the chick at the beginning of the story (there's plot holes as well, but the gameplay and the acting really hold it up).

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow was good, but it's really hard and I'm not sure even their easiest mode makes it accessible.

I agree, I'd love more good games with great stories, though:)

It's not really a gift per se, it's a promo, the promo price just happens to be "Free" instead of 2.99 or whatever.

I own it too and don't regret paying for it. I'm glad everyone else will be able to get it. The hot spots everyone seems to hate so much makes it pretty accessible for the non-Adventure gamers out there.

I have to wonder about the accuracy of download stats. For every game I own, the game page says "game owned - redownload", even when I have never downloaded the game. And I know I have not downloaded all 9 of the games in the RPG pack I just bought yesterday. I do not remember pages being this way some months ago.

And for anyone wondering, the download counts and tempo are updated for new pages at least a few times an hour. The multiplier has varied from .36 to .39 over the last hour.

I will confess to being a bit puzzled by that statement; we are giving you guys a free game and paying download costs and what all out of pocket. How is that not a gift?

EDIT: fixing stupid typos. Composing forum posts on a tablet is not always wise before you've had your morning caffeine. :P

It could be seen as promotion in the way that it might provide incentive to get part two and three of the series for those that get the first gifted and enjoy the game.
That said, I doubt that orcishgamer meant to degrade the very kind GOG offer, but rather tried to argue why there's no 'replacement' if somebody already got the game.
Personally, I really hope to grab it and am quite glad about the offer (and am going to bite my own rear end if my Internet fails at that time).

Here, let me hold that for you while you drink your coffee. Electronics and conductive liquids usually don't mix well!

Free Shadow of the Templars to go along with The Smoking Mirror, which I already own.Superb.

Well, you only have to put it in your cart and checkout with it; actually downloading your "purchase" can wait until your Internet isn't borked.

I will warn you: several of my coworkers have tried that. To discourage them, I no longer shoot to wound. :P

I can't bring myself to do it.
As a result of the fact that Broken Sword is a well-known franchise, it has already sold pretty well, so we would have had to negotiate two completely seperate giveaways to cover all of the people who already own the game. Not all of our partners are as awesome as Revolution Software, who was kind enough to say, "Sure, you can give that game away for 48 hours." We wanted to make sure to reward them by keeping attention on them for that cool move, so we can't give away a second game to all of you guys who are already owners of BS1.

Sorry about that!
It's another step in the plan to raise French awareness. First the shifty French monk, then a free game with the most abysmal French accent imaginable (and I watched the entire Allo, Allo series. oddly bought in Poland). It's all coming together now.

That is easier said than done when your router shows no sign of ever achieving DSL synchronisation, or in other words, I was stranded with zero internet access for nine out of twelve days.

That said, your web developers really leave me puzzled.
I can not imagine a single way in which a (however tricky) database access would bloat up (a dynamic) page size (and most certainly not in the gigabytes), but 'only' cause a serious slow down on the query and massive stress on the server.
Which would easily be adjusted by simply caching the number each second and just displaying that instead, assuming that you have a total counter on downloads already and are not intentionally killing your database by looking up every single user and their unique downloads.
That gets me to wonder how you're going to see who initiated the concrete 6 millionth download if you can not even generate the number on the fly.
Funny mystical magic you're yielding there ;)
It's no surprise, that Revolution software is a cool company, I think they even gave ScummVM developers access to the source code in order to get the games running right. I believe most companies would have frowned upon that.

Heh, even with a 100% off promo, people like to find a reason to complain :-)

(that smiley at the end means it's written in a joke-ish manner, so to all of those who like to find a reason to complain, please don't take offence)
Well, kiddos always will find a reason to complain. It's like in their home "mommy, i wanted green lollipop! So what it tastes the same as the yellow one! I wanted green!, booo!"

And then they're complaining the same at shops, to their bosses, and finally the state.

Small children becaoming big losers.

It's not so odd as it looks like. Allo Allo was pretty popular here :)
