Hello all,

I'm trying to choose an RPG, since I never really played them. I have tried the first Fallout and despite my best intentions I simply couldn't get into it. The setting and the look is cool, but there was one aspect of it that I'm not good at: turn-based combat. Not my cup of tea I guess. Anyway I wanted to try another one and I know these games are very popular on GOG.
Help me choose one, I was thinking to get one of the bestsellers here:
a) Baldur's Gate 1 or 2,
b) Planescape: Torment,
c) Arcanum
Whaddayasay Goggers?
Baldur's gate 1 and 2, absolute classics, great story, setting, and the combat is real time with an option to pause and select actions, which is a great way to get into rpgs for the first time

It really depends on what your looking for in an rpg, could you expand a little please
I'm not even sure... I guess a decent story, involving universe... Good writing is probably my main concern.

Anyone who knows me would have predicted this, but I'm going to recommend Neverwinter Nights: Diamond. It's a rather old-school RPG with a massive amount of free third-party modules that give the game hundreds of hours of content, and it is quite easy to play it in realtime, but you have the option to pause if absolutely necessary.
All those are great games, but be aware that Arcanum also has turn-based combat somewhat similar to that of the Fallout series, so if you didn't care too much for Fallout due to the combat then there's a good chance you'll have a similar aversion to Arcanum. Both Planescape: Torment and the Baldur's Gate series are highly recommended- PS:T is very heavy on story, so be sure you're alright with doing plenty of reading if you choose it (it also has some of the best writing in video game history). The BG series strikes a good balance between story, characters, and combat, so is a good happy median if you want a bit of everything. Also, I'd highly recommend Gothic 1&2, provided a single-character, third-person game is fine with you (as opposed to isometric, party-based games such as the one's you've listed). Divine Divinity is also a good game to consider, combining isometric, action-oriented combat with a fairly strong story and a nice large gameworld to explore.
I hear the second one is better. Think I can skip the first one, or will I miss out on some specific to Balder's Gate 1 awesomeness?

BG2 is definitely the better of the two, but that doesnt mean the first one should be overlooked. If you enjoy building up a character from scratch (importing lets you take one character from the start of BG1 to the end of BG:TOB), or if you want to get the whole story (and Baldur's Gate has a good story,) then get both.

EDIT: the one disadvantage to BG1 is that it can be a bit harder early on than most rpgs as low level D&D characters are as tough as paper mache.

Thanks, but somehow this one doesn't appeal to me. I'm not even sure why, you know?
But thanks for suggestion!

You can skip the first BG and still enjoy the sequel, since BG 2 is a great game on its own but you'll miss some references (to the story and characters) if you do so.
Both games are self-contained but they're part of the same story.

The first game is very good too anyway, some people even prefer it for its open-endedness and lower-level characters.
Thanks for the heads-up re: Arcanum!

Absolutely, it's definitely not for everyone. Have you considered Gothic, or are you just looking at the ones on your list? I've played a bit of Baldur's Gate II, and it was certainly quite detailed and fun.
If you don't want to deal with combat and only focus on a story look no further than Torment. Baldur's Gate 2 and Arcanum require patience and knowledge of the genre get through the games without completely breaking your patience/balls. Torment on the other hand has no game over (unless you make a couple of stupid choices but they are scripted) and is more a book than a game.

Okay, you probably want to play Planescape: Torment.

That game has one of the best stories ever, and the writing is top-notch. It's also not as combat-heavy or as complicated as the BG series. While I LOVE Baldur's Gate 2, it's much more difficult because there's a lot of combat, which can involve a lot of micromanagement. You'll probably end up pausing the game every couple of seconds so you can issue new orders to your party members.

As for the issue with BG, yes BG2 will spoil BG1 for you, and you may lose some lore and background information on characters you meet, for example. However, BG2 has a completely separate main story, so you'll still be able to enjoy it. On the other hand, playing BG1 after BG2 is going to be much less fun.

Arcanum is thee best game on GoG. There hasn't been any other game to date that has been as versatile as to how you go about completing quests.

Need an key item from a merchant?
-Run a quest for him.
-Buy it from him.
-Sneak into his shop at night and steal it.
-Kill him right there on the spot and take it.

EDIT

Oh yeah, as someone mentioned above Arcanum has turn-based combat.

NeverWinter Nights is auto combat that you can pause like in Baldur's Gate and you can steer your character around, up close, with the WASD to give you more of a feeling of being in more control than just Diablo-style one handed point and click.

And if you want a bit more action oriented and arcadie than that, Gothic and Two Worlds are awesome. Gothic and Two Worlds are a lot like Zelda Ocarina of Time.
