So I stupidly tried to download a PS2 emulator to play Persona 3, and I downloaded the wrong one. All of these unsafe files got into my laptop. I used Malwarebytes and Norton Antivirus and got rid of most of the bad files, then uninstalled or deleted most of the programs they installed. But there are still a few files that won't delete because windows says they're in use. Now every time I go to a new page a bunch of new tabs or pop ups open and I have to be careful not to click on them. I don't think any real harm was done, but it's really, really annoying. Does anyone know of an easy or free technique to rid my computer of all these malicious files and ads? Or am I gonna have to pay a lot to get it fixed?
This question / problem has been solved by RWarehallimage
start the pc on safe mode and then run the antivirus I recommend you to download kaspersky for this and scann the pc (again on safe mode) then use hijackthis and see if there still anything bad on the pc
you can use this program http://www.infospyware.com/Software/click.php?id=60 or this one http://www.infospyware.com/Software/click.php?id=46 to unlock the files too

Don't even bother trying to clean it. Just wipe the thing and re-install. Viruses these days really worm their way into the system, and even if you think you've got them all it's just about impossible to be absolutely sure (and it's the ones that just quietly harvest your data and passwords that can really make life a pain). So just nuke the thing and start fresh- it'll save you a lot of time and headaches in the long run.
^^This

You can scan all you want, only that there is no software to catch them all, and its better to be save than
have a nice keylogger sent your data next time you purchase something or?

When you say "wipe it" do you mean the OS or the whole hard drive? 1) how do I go about doing that? And 2) does that destroy all my saved files and settings, I.E. my resume's, emails, anything I might need for work and school is on my laptop, not my desktop.

And if I try to back this stuff up on my portable HD, Won't that just back up the virus as well?

Dont do that, they are suggesting to format the pc, and clearly you dont know how to do that,

Do this download an install this http://usa.kaspersky.com/files?file=kss&lang=la and this http://www.infospyware.com/Software/mbam-setup.exe

then restart the pc, while is starting hit the F8 key(before the windows logo appears) and then select the safe mode start, then run those programs while you are in safe mode

restart the pc again(after running and scanning with those softwares) and run this program:
http://www.infospyware.com/Software/HijackThis.exe

scan with that soft and save the file and upload it here I will continue helping you out.

Or you could take the laptop to a professional computer place... I am pretty sure they would reformat your laptop for you, if you really want to be safe and sure about removing the problem. Just make sure you give them your Windows disc(s) if you do, so they can re-install Windows.

Me, personally, I would wipe the drive... but then, I don't even use virus scanners because I know how to avoid viruses properly =Þ (but that's me)

Ok, I can't the find the mbam file, but I'll run the other one.

I would, but that's going to cost almost $100 and I have no idea where my windows disk is.

Another alternative not previously mentioned...
Restore a System Restore point from prior to your mistake.
Usually whenever Windows updates, it sets such a thing. Most hijackers are redirecting your registry, so backtracking only costs you the changes and should provide freedom to find and fix existing infections with repair programs.
Well now I can't find any way to restart in Safe mode. I've gone through the BIOS menu three times, and there is no option anywhere.

I these antivirus programs don't work, how do I do a system restore?

restart the pc, and start hitting the F8 key in your keyboard there is no option in the bios, while the SO is starting and you press the key (dont hold it) before the windows logo appear, it should give you a blackscreen letting you choose the safe mode run

To restore the system go to start up menu and write "restore system " fairly easy to use

I got it. I think I was hitting f8 too early. I'm doing the scans now.

This is what I do.
It looks like your PC got hit really hard by malware. I personally recommend formatting the drive and starting it all over again. If it were a simple trojan or low risk virus a simple AV check would solve the issue. But considering the fact that you can't even remove them and random tabs keep opening i really recommend wiping the drive.

No AV will ever have 100% perfect detection rate, so even if you manage to remove most of the nasty viruses, something might still get past detection. Yes, formatting is a pain in the ass, but i really think it's better to be safe than sorry, especially if that's the PC you use to buy stuff online (like from GOG).

By the way, which AV were you using before you got infected? Good AV programs can detect a malicious file before you open it.
